Buckwheat Zydeco Some of the musical highlights of the 2006 Detroit Jazz Festival
include an explosive opening evening Friday featuring The Funk Brothers
and Temptations Revue starring Dennis Edwards at Campus Martius Park,
Taj Mahal, Joan Osborne, Sergio Mendes and Brazil 2006, Ahmad Jamal,
the Lewis Nash Quartet in a tribute to Tommy Flanagan, Richie Havens,
Dr John, Diane Schuur, Lou Donaldson w/Dr. Lonnie Smith, the Holmes
Brothers, Buckwheat Zydeco, Joe Locke, Mose Allison, Marcia Ball,
Gerald Wilson Big Band and more. (A complete schedule follows).
The 27th Annual Detroit International Jazz Festival will close both
directions of Woodward Avenue from Hart Plaza to Campus Martius,
presenting over 100 musical acts on six stages. Last year the festival
expanded from its core jazz programming to embrace more musical forms
on more stages; Blues, Gospel, R&B, Zydeco, and of course, a
liberal helping of Motown soul. The city rejoiced, delivering record
attendance and concession sales for the festival.

"Last year, Gretchen Valade of Mack Avenue Records launched a great new
festival tradition by establishing a Motown theme and celebration for
the opening night,” says festival Artistic Director Frank Malfitano,
“The result was the largest opening night attendance in the festival's
26-year history. Given Detroit's rich musical history and legacy of
Jazz, R&B and Soul, the decision to feature Motown artists again
this year on opening night was virtually automatic. For the many
thousands of international and national visitors who come to the
festival annually from around the world and across the nation, we're
extremely pleased to be presenting two incredible groups of artists who
defined "The Motown Sound" and put Detroit on the map.

One crowd pleasing addition to the 2006 Jazz Fest will be the Food
Network Village, the popular food channel will be filming its Food
Network Challenge competition, testing the skill of local pastry chefs
in building outrageous jazz-themed cakes. The Detroit Jazz Festival was
selected as one of a very few national events to host the competition.
The final episode will air in October.
For the first time in 2006, the Detroit Jazz Fest will feature Saturday
evening Fireworks on the Riverfront, a special Jazz- themed display
programmed by Great Lakes Fireworks. Fiery musical notes will shower
over the river during the headlining acts on Saturday night. And, for
those who hate to eat and run, a fine dining “row” will offer
wait-staff, menus and table seating.
Another addition to the ’06 Jazz Fest is the Detroit Princess, the 222
ft riverboat that resides at the foot of Hart Plaza. During the
daylight hours, the ship will host student ensembles and jazz
education, and cruises that are open to the public are also being
planned.
“This is a great time in the history of the organization. In
addition to program expansion, the festival is building relationships
with other cultural groups in Detroit, working toward a year-round
presence in the community. The new festival owners have a bright
vision for the future, and I am honored to play a role in helping to
define and implement that vision” says Executive Director, Terri
Pontremoli.
