A happy new development for August
is the return--by popular demand--of soulful chanteuse Kim
Nalley to her weekly performances on Tuesday nights. Also
highlighting the Pearl's August calendar are the
great jazz steel pan master Andy Narell, the Julian
Lage-Dayna Stephens Group, legendary singer/vocalist Frank
Jackson, sassy New Orleans singer Ingrid Lucia
(of Flying Neutrinos fame), singular and exciting vocalese master Giacomo
Gates and swinging cabaret singer Mark Robinson.
And as always, the explosive Contemporary
Jazz Orchestra holds down the fort on Monday nights.
Here are the details

The Frank Jackson Quartet,
Friday-Sunday, August 5-7 Pianist/vocalist Frank
Jackson is a true San Francisco legend. He's been performing his unique
brand of deeply heart-warming jazz since his early days at Jimbo's Bob
City during the heyday of the Fillmore jazz scene in the 5-'s and 60's.
Jackson is generously featured throughout the wonderful recently
published book on that era, "The Harlem of the West."

August 10 and Thursday August 17 This sassy New

present two evenings of her fascinating reinventions of the great New
Orleans Jazz Standards.

Soul
Sauce, Friday-Sunday, August 11-13 This "local
favorite" ensemble got their start several years ago as a
Cal Tjader tribute band. They've since expanded their
repertoire admirably, but they still draw on the rich body of
Afro-Cuban and Brazilian-influenced jazz, incorporating into the mix
both original works and unique, powerful arrangements of contemporary
compositions and jazz standards as well.

Sakésho with
Andy Narell, Friday-Sunday, August 18-20 Steel pan
jazz master Andy Narell comes to Pearl's with Sakésho, a
band drawing inspiration from the biguine - the syncopated,
polyrhythmic music from the islands of Martinique and
Guadeloupe. Sakésho is propelled by a trio of
master French Caribbean musicians: pianist Mario Canonge, bassist
Michel Alibo and drummer Jean Philippe Fanfant.

Mark Robinson, Thursday,
August 24 Robinson began his life in music studying
opera vocals, but he was soon seduced by the wonders of the Great
American Songbook. A pleasing and promising straight-ahead singer,
Robinson has been drawing plenty of praise of late. Allaboutjazz called
his recent CD, "Some Small Dive," a "truly superb effort."

Giacomo
Gates, Friday-Sunday, August 25-27
A beautiful, full-bodied voice, extraordinary rhythm and a
fascinating life story set vocalist Giacomo Gates apart. As jazz
great Jon Hendricks told New York Times writer Thomas
Staudter, "Not many people can master this music, but Giacomo Gates
has. He's an important man." Read more
