"An incredible sound charged out of Pearl's. ... Good God, these guys can play! And they know every chart known to man." -Christopher Caen, SF Examiner
Mike Rinta of the CJO © Ron Nabity Now in its thirteenth year, the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra continues its Monday night tradition at Jazz at Pearl's. Few sounds equal the thrill of hearing a talented, tight-knit jazz orchestra play live. CJO delivers a swinging rhythm section, high-octane brass and a polished repertoire of original arrangements. The CJO's repertoire comes from the finest writers in the modern big-band tradition (after the swing years). The CJO is a 16-piece jazz ensemble, featuring many of the finest musicians in the Bay Area. In the long-standing Monday night tradition of New York's Village Vanguard Orchestra, the CJO has been playing Monday nights at Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco for eleven years. Since its inception, the CJO has attracted the Bay Area's best and brightest as well as played host to visiting guest artists. The current lineup-all skilled technicians and soloists-boasts a collective résumé a mile long.
© Steve Sheraton As the West Coast’s answer to the long-standing tradition of the Vanguard Orchestra in New York City, the CJO has been playing Monday nights at Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco for over 11 years. In January of 1995, saxophonist Christopher Pitts quickly established his hand-selected band as an exciting be-bop and post-bop experience featuring the music of Thad Jones, Oliver Nelson, Frank Foster, Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus. In April of 2000, Pitts relocated to Boston, leaving the orchestra in the hands of saxophonist/arranger Alex Budman. In five years under Budman's direction, original arrangements were added and recorded, giving the band a unique identity and a new bent toward original music. Alex recently relocated to Los Angeles, leaving the band with 12-year CJO veteran saxophonist and arranger Tod Dickow. The CJO has featured many talented vocalists including Kim Nalley, Duane Lawrence, Jamie Davis, Denise Perrier and Kenny Washington. Over its 12-year history, the band has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Fillmore Jazz Festival, KCSM's Jazz on the Hill, Spreckels Performing Arts Series, KXJZ's Waterfront concerts, SF's Black and White Ball and Yoshi's Jazz House. Come here them on any given Monday at Jazz at Pearl's. There are 2 Show every Monday at 8:00 pm & 10:00 pm and the shows are 75 - 90 minutes each. The doors open 30 minutes prior to each show.
