“Jazz is a good barometer of freedom… In its beginnings, the United States of America spawned certain ideals of freedom and independence through which, eventually, jazz was evolved, and the music is so free that man people say it is the only unhampered, unhindered expression of complete freedom yet produced in this country.” -Duke Ellington

The coolest festival in the Crescent City features the hottest jazz around! The sixth annual Satchmo SummerFest, a four-day event celebrating the lasting influence of jazz icon, international cultural ambassador and native son, Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, will be held August 3 – August 6, 2006.

Due to the damaging effects of Hurricane Katrina the U.S. Mint is unable to host Satchmo SummerFest in 2006 as it did in previous years. In light of that the French Market has graciously donated space between Ursulines and Barracks Street for Satchmo SummerFest. Festival-goers will again enjoy what makes Satchmo SummerFest so special - free jazz performances, delicious local cuisine in Red Bean Alley, educating seminars, children's activities, art exhibits, a "Satchmo Club Strut," a very special evening concert, a Jazz Mass and authentic second-line parade, and much more. With so many festivities planned, it's no wonder why Satchmo SummerFest has quickly become a summertime favorite and one of the Southeast Tourism Society's Top 20 Events.

Complete schedule follows. For more information, call (800) 673-5725, (504) 522-5730, or visit www.fqfi.org for more info. Image
