The Bill Goodwin Quartet performs at Detour (349 E. 13th St. New Yrok)
on Saturday, July 22 with sets starting at 9:30. The cover is only $5 to
hear this outstanding ensemble. The Bill Goodwin Quartet includes Adam
Niewood on saxophones, Frank LoCrasto on piano, Matt Brewer on bass,
and Bill Goodwin on drums.
Bill Goodwin was born in Los
Angeles on January 8, 1942. An almost completely self-taught
drummer, Bill attributes his early interest in the drums to Shelly
Manne's playing on the movie soundtrack of “The Man with the Golden
Arm.” Before that he had taken piano lessons and studied the tenor
saxophone. His father's extensive record collection gave him the
opportunity to hear and learn songs, and he still hears the form of the
music first.
From 1959 to the present, Goodwin has been a professional drummer,
playing with the likes of Bill Evans, Dexter Gordon, Art Pepper, Jim
Hall, George Shearing and Bobby Hutcherson, and singers such as June
Christy, Joe Williams, Tony Bennett and Manhattan Transfer. The drum
chair with Gary Burton brought him to the East Coast in 1969. After a
three year stint with Burton's group Bill settled down in an old
farmhouse in the Poconos and worked the resorts. It was there that he
and bassist Steve Gilmore became a team. Goodwin, like Gilmore, is a
charter member of The Phil Woods Quartet (now Quintet), joining at it's
inception in February 1974.
Phil Woods says, "Bill is the magic ingredient in our all acoustic
group. Bill is one of the masters who plays the song, not just the
time. He shades and tints beautifully. He plays the music."
Bill Goodwin has produced all of the The Phil Woods Quartet/Quintet and
Little Big Band recordings since 1980 including the Grammy Award
winning albums MORE LIVE
(Adelphi), AT THE VANGUARD
(Antilles) and the 1992 Grammy nominee ALL BIRD'S CHILDREN (Concord Jazz),
as well as THE PHIL WOODS QUINTET
MEETS DIZZY GILLESPIE on Timeless Records and FLOWERS FOR HODGES
by Phil Woods and Jim McNeely duo. He has also produced several Tom
Harrell recordings and was Omnisound's main producer of jazz product
including: PHIL WOODS/LEW TABACKIN
and Dave Frishberg's SONGBOOKS,
VOLUME I and VOLUME II. His most recently released production
efforts are Keith Jarrett's LIVE AT
THE DEER HEAD for ECM Records, and THE PHIL WOODS QUARTET/QUINTET 20TH
ANNIVERSARY ALBUM for Mosaic, Phil Woods’ ASTOR & ELIS for Chesky Records
and the Quintet’s MILE HIGH JAZZ
for Concord Jazz.
 Adam Niewood © Andrea Canter
Adam Niewood (Saxophonist,
Improviser, Composer, woodwind mouthpiece technician) grew up in Glen
Ridge, New Jersey. The son of Gerrard (known as 'Gerry Niewood,' a jazz
saxophonist and woodwind doubler) & Gurly Niewood (classical
pianist and clarinetist), he had an early start in music. By the time
Adam was five years old, he had tagged along on two world tours with
Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel, and Liza Minnelli.
Adam met Drummer Bill Goodwin at an IAJE conference in New York. Bill
had worked many times with Gerry, and took a liking to Adam right away,
and started calling him for gigs. “For the longest time, any playing I
would do was in a practice room, in School, or an informal jam session.
Meeting Bill led to many professional performances and recordings that
helped to shape my sound and overall approach to playing music. One has
to have certain experiences on the "bandstand" to really learn how to
perform. I’m very fortunate that a seasoned professional was patient
enough to take me under his wing. We have played countless gigs
together, in numerous band configurations including: Bill Charlap, Jim
McNeely, Rufus Reid, Warren Vache, Vic Juris, Steve Gilmore, Gene
Bertoncini, etc. All situations I wouldn’t have found myself in, if not
for Bill. He is a fabulous musician and I’ve learned a lot about
playing music from him. He is also a fabulous producer of fine Jazz
recordings."
Frank LoCrasto was born in
Garland, Texas in March of 1983. He was introduced to music through his
parents at an early age and began learning piano at the age of 8.
During high school, he attended Dallas' Booker T. Washington for the
Performing and Visual Arts. During his 4 years at this great school, he
made connections with Dallas' top musicians playing several nights out
of the week. He traveled all over the U.S. with the school playing
different festivals and competitions. He won several awards, many of
which came from Downbeat magazine and IAJE. During his last year at
Arts Magnet, Frank was picked 1 of 5 out of nearly a thousand through
an audition to attend and perform at the National Foundation for
Advancement in the Arts (NFAA) "Arts Week" which is dedicated to
honoring America's top young artist. While at "Arts Week", Frank scored
a level 1 at his performance which made him eligible to become a
Presidential Scholar in the Arts, an award given to only twenty artist
each year from across the country. After a long process of applications
and 20 or so essay questions, Frank's application was accepted and he
was flown to Washington DC where he performed and was presented with a
medal from President George Bush. Frank was then offered a full
scholarship to study at the New School University's Jazz Program. While
at the school, he studied with Bruce Barth, Garry Dial, and Kirk Nurock
among many others before graduating 4 1/2 years later. While living in
New York, Frank has performed with Gregory Tardy, Joe Lovano, John
Ellis, Mark Turner, Chris Cheek, Jonathan Kriesberg, Pat Martino, Lage
Lund, Hans Glawischnig, Eric Alexander, Avishai Cohen, Will Vinson,
George Garzone, and many more. He is currently a member of the Jeremy
Pelt Quartet, and is featured on Pelt's latest MAXJAZZ release,
"Identity". Outside of Frank's busy schedule of performing, touring,
and recording, he leads his own group that will be recording a record
for the MAXJAZZ label due for release in the Fall of 2006. Outside of
music, Frank enjoys cooking, wine making, friends and family, and
making short films. He resides in Brooklyn, New York. Matt Brewer
Matt Brewer was born April 20,
1983, in Oklahoma City but spent most of his youth in Albuquerque, New
Mexico. At tge age of ten, he found the bass during a summer
program at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. There he began studying
classical bass from two world renowned bass instructors, Winston
Budrow, and Lawrence Hurst, while learning about jazz from his father.
Matt started gigging professionally at the age of twelve around the
Albuquerque area and was soon winning awards from the top university
jazz festivals, twice winning the Outstanding Jazz Performer award
which had never before been awarded to a middle school student.
He continued his study of classical bass with the superb principal
bassist of the New Mexico Symphony, Jean-Luc Matton, but soon realized
that it would be necessary to be in an overall more creative and art
appreciating environment. This led to the decision to attend the
Interlochen Arts Academy. Matt continued his study of classical
bass with instructor Derek Weller, and took jazz performance classes
with Bill Sears. During his junior and senior years, Matt was selcted
from applicants all across the country, to participate in the Grammy
Band. He then performed on the 2000 Grammy Awards telecast in a group
that was the first ever to perform on the show without being nominated
for a Grammy. Also during his senior year he was invited to participate
in the Vail Jazz All-Stars program uner the direction of Bassist John
Clayton. This was Matt's first experience with a jazz bass teacher.
After graduating the Interlochen Arts Academy, Matt attended the
inagural class of The Juilliard Jazz Program and studied with bassists
Rodney Whitaker and Ben Wolfe. After spending two years at Juilliard he
decided to leave school to make time for his busy touring schedule. He
has worked with artists such as, Greg Osby, Greg Tardy, Chris Cheek,
Mark Turner, Jeff "Tain" Watts, and many others. He has had extensive
touring and teaching experience across The United States, Europe,
Canada, the Middle East, and Japan. He is featured on Greg Osby's
current Blue Note release "Channel Three". He currently resides in New
York.
