Caravan of Dreams was located at 312 Houston (downtown), Fort Worth, 817-877-3000, www.caravanofdreams.comThe De Capo Jazz and Blues Lovers Guide to the U.S. said: - The premier music club in the area, Caravan, which is financed by Edward Bass of the old Fort Worth Bass family, brings in a whole host of national talent. At one time, much of it was jazz. Ornette Coleman, a Fort Worth native, opened the place up 10 years ago, and Dizzy Gillispie, Herbie Hancock, Stanley Turrentine, Carmen McRae, and Billy Eckstine were among the many who played here.Today the club's booking policy is much more eclectic. Everything from rock to Irish music can be heard, and the jazz that is presented tends toward the contemporary-Kirk Whalum, Grover Washington, Jr., and the like. The club is a large sumptuous affair, made up to look like a plush sultan's tent, with a ceiling of silky fabric and a floor of red carpeting. Huge murals tracing the hisory of jazz cover one wall and the sound system is state of the art. On the second floor of the Caravan is a theater, and on the roof is the Grotto Bar, built to look like a cave. The view from up here is spectacular. And then there's the old rooftop "Desert Dome," housing the "largest collection of cacti and succulents in Texas." So what if it's stange, this is Texas. Downstairs in the gift shop, cacti are for sale right next to record albums.
