"In my world, the first thing I reach for is the sound. Technique is Ok, but if you got the technique and I got a good sound, I'll beat you every time. You can play a thousand notes and I can play one note and wipe you out. What I reach for is ... a sound." -Dewey Redman

NEA Jazz Master Herbie Hancock

On Friday, June 23, at 8:00 p.m. at Carnegie Hall, you can enjoy Herbie's World: Herbie Hancock & Friends. Herbie will perform with groups of two, three, four and five featuring Quartet with Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland and Brian Blade; Trio with Jack DeJohnette and Ron Carter; Piano Duets with Gonzalo Rubalcaba; and Quintet with Richie Barshay, Lionel Loueke, Matt Garrison and Lili Haydn with special guest Marcus Miller. Herbie Hancock's 40-year career embraces a remarkable body of work with unparalleled artistic and commercial triumphs. He has received six Grammys, an Oscar, and countless music magazine poll awards.

Herbie's friends include some of the jazz world's most renowned players and creators of music. Hancock is a true icon of modern music. Throughout his explorations, he has transcended limitations and genres while still maintaining his unique, unmistakable voice. With an illustrious career spanning five decades, he continues to amaze audiences and never ceases to expand the public's vision of what music, particularly jazz, is all about today. Proceeds from this concert will benefit the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. According to Hancock, the Institute is one of the programs that is especially "near and dear" to his heart. This full scholarship program, located at the University of Southern California, accepts a select group of the world's most talented young jazz artists and provides them with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from jazz legends, including Hancock.

The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org) was established in 1986 with a mission to preserve America's legacy of jazz through performance and education. The Institute offers the world's most promising young musicians college level training by America's jazz masters and presents public school-based jazz education programs for young people around the world. Additionally, the Institute provides scholarships, performance opportunities, and worldwide recognition to gifted young musicians through its many jazz education programs.

Begun in 1995, the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at the University of Southern California is an intensive two-year graduate level college program that enables a select group of the world's most gifted young musicians to study tuition-free with major jazz musicians and educators. Acclaimed trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard serves as the program’s Artistic Director. Jazz legends who have served as Artists-in-Residence include Herbie Hancock, Clark Terry, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Jackie McLean, Dave Holland, Steve Turre, John Scofield, Terri Lyne Carrington, Ron Carter, and Jimmy Heath.
