Jacob Siegel, 17, from Apple Valley, MN was awarded an Honorable
Mention in the 2006 ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composers competition.
Sponsored by the Gibson Foundation (the charitable arm of Gibson
Guitar), the Young Composers Awards encourage composers age 13-29
through cash awards. Notes ASCAP President and Chair Marilyn Bergman,
“The young talents nurtured by this program represent the future of
this uniquely American art form. We congratulate the recipients and
extend thanks to the dedicated panel of ASCAP composers who selected
the winners.” Judges this year included John Fedchock, Jay Leonhart,
and Rufus Reid. In the older division (19-29), 23 awards were
presented. Among the younger group (age 13-18), four awards and two
honorable mentions were announced.
Jacob, a student at Eastview High School in Apple Valley, received his
Honorable Mention in the 13-18 division. He’s also an accomplished
performer: Last year, Jacob was one of three winners in the first
Dakota Foundation/Schubert Club Jazz Piano Competition, receiving the
David Paulus Scholarship for his performance of “ESP” (Wayne Shorter),
“Naima” (John Coltrane) and “Armando’s Rhumba” (Chick Corea).
