"you rehearse until you're hitting everything on the head, and here comes a band like the Savoy Sultans, raggedy, fuzzy sounding, and they upset everything.'What am I doing here?' you wonder. But that's the way it is. That's jazz. If you get too clean, too precise. you don't swing sometimes, and the fun goes out of the music." - Trombonist Dicky Wells

Dr John
Dr John
The U.S. Bank Saint Louis Jazz Festival will be held on Friday, June 23 & Saturday, June 24 2006 in Clayton's Shaw Park, St. Louis County, Missouri. Performers this year include: Dr. John, David Sanborn, Preservation Hall Band, Readus Miller Project, The Clarke/Duke Project, Denise Thimes, LaMar Harris, The Craig Russo Latin Jazz Project, Rick Haydon & The SIUE Jazz Ensemble, Anita Rosamond, New World, Harmonica Jazz, and Lizz Wright.

About the Artists:

Dr. John proudly stands along side of Louis Armstrong and Fats Domino as one of New Orleans' all-time distinctive voices. Not only is the Good Doctor's dry, gravel cackle one of the most infectious sounds in both jazz and popular music, but he is universally celebrated as the living embodiment of the rich musical heritage exclusive to the Crescent City. Both his unique musical approach and his striking physical appearance encompasses local African, American-Indian and Creole influences mixed in with quite a few equally exotic tributaries besides. He's both the essence of the city's colorful past and its ever evolving future and, beyond. www.drjohn.org

Preservation Hall Jazz Band
Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Named for the historic Preservation Hall in New Orleans, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been referred to by one critic as, "a bridge across the ages - a link between the present day and the heyday of traditional New Orleans music." The group, which has been touring for more than 25 years and currently, consists of musicians who range in age from 31-88 works to preserve the New Orleans Jazz style. Collectively, these musicians represent the industry's elite; a finely tuned band whose members hail from highly regarded musical families. Together, they keep alive the traditions and history of this uniquely American sound. www.preservationhall.com

George Duke and Stanley Clarke reunite for a compelling set of music. George Duke is one of the most creative keyboardists working on the contemporary side of jazz, and Stanley Clarke is known for his innovative and influential work on double bass and bass guitar. www.georgeduke.com www.stanleyclarke.com

Lizz Wright
Lizz Wright took the music world by storm in 2003 with breakout performances at Billie Holiday tributes in Chicago and Los Angeles and with her debut album Salt (Verve). Her rich, gospel-trained contralto soars in an R&B- meets-jazz setting. On her 2003 debut, Salt, Lizz Wright was hailed by People Magazine as "one of the year's most promising new voices," a "smoky, simmering" talent, according to USA Today. With her highly anticipated sophomore album Dreaming Wide Awake, Wright embraces the ever-evolving history of jazz, gospel, rhythm-and-blues and the singer-songwriter tradition.

David Sanborn
David Sanborn returns to the jazz festival after 5 years Veteran alto sax master David Sanborn has played a crucial role in establishing the sound of contemporary jazz and instrumental pop. In his remarkable three-and-a- half-decade recording and performing career, he's consistently embodied the dual ideals of virtuosity and versatility, revealing a one-of-a-kind talent on his own much-loved releases while building a singularly impressive resume that includes work with everyone from Gil Evans to Bruce Springsteen. www.davidsanborn.com

The multi-talented Denise Thimes is a consummate artist, as comfortable as an actress as she is a singer. St. Louisans know Denise Thimes as the daughter of local jazz-blues radio legend, Lou "Fatha" Thimes, but she has already established a name for herself in both music and theater. In St. Louis, Thimes' performances at the St. Louis Black Repertory Company have garnered her Nine Woody Awards for Best Supporting Actress and for Outstanding Musical Performances.
