The Dafnis Prieto Quintet Performs at the Jazz Standard On May 12th through the 14th. The Quintet includes David Binney on alto & soprano sax, Peter Apfelbaum on tenor sax & percussion, Manuel Valera on piano, Hans Glawischnig on bass, and Dafnis Prieto on drums.

Born in Santa Clara, Cuba, drummer/composer/band leader Dafnis Prieto began his career with the bands of Cuban stars like Carlos Maza and Ramon Valle. Prieto studied in Santa Clara as a youngster at the School of Fine Arts and later at the National School of Music in Havana, receiving a thorough classical education and a breadth of knowledge of Afro-Cuban music, Jazz and world music from experiencing the Cuban music scene around him rather than academic sources.

Dafnis Prieto has more than ten years of profesional experience, going back to his first European tours with a succession of talented pianist including Carlos Maza, Ramon Valle and the "Columna B" Group. He has been performing with some of the world greates jazz artists such as: Jane Bunnett & Spirit of Havana, Steve Coleman & Five Elements, Henry Threadgill, Zooid and Make a Move, Eddie Palmieri Afro-Caribbean Jazz Orchestra, Chico O'Farril & The Afro-Cuban Big Band, Dave Samuels & The Caribbean Jazz Project, Peter Apfelbaum & The New York Hieroglyphics, DD Jackson Trio & Octet, Ed Simon Trio, Michel Camilo Trio, Chucho Valdez Quartet, Andrew Hill, John Benitez, Jorge Sylvester, Claudia Acuna, Don Byron, Kip Hanrahan, Roy Hargroves Havana Crisol, World Economic Forum with Branford Marsalis, Herbie Hancock and Arturo Sandoval, As well as Dafnis Prieto Quintet and Absolute Quintet. He has played in several venues, touring in the United States and throughout the world.

On May 12-14 hear the Dafnis Prieto Quintet at the Jazz Standard with sets at 7:30 & 9:30PM and on Friday & Saturday a third set starts at 11:30 PM. Cover charge is $25 / $20 Sunday. The Jazz Standard is located at 116 East 27th Street (btw. Park and Lex.) 212-576-2232 www.jazzstandard.net.
