Since
1999, Dave Hagedorn (vibes), Chris Olson (guitar), Kevin Clements
(bass), and Jay Epstein (drums) have performed intermittently as the
quartet Meantime. Renamed Maintime to avoid a legal hassle) these
magical artists, in varying combinations, have further amassed
years of collaboration, which explains the empathy that pervades
their long overdue debut, In the Meantime.
The official release party is set for May 26th at the
French Press Jazz Café in St. Paul, but a sneak preview was
offered last month and the CD can be enjoyed now (see the end of this
review for information). Destined to be on everyone’s “Best
of” local releases for 2006, the recording is filled with engaging
harmonic etudes, resonant tone poems, and luxuriously floating
melodies.

Dave Hagedorn “brings an integrated knowledge of
complex harmony and rhythm that never fails to swing or to move
anyone with ears” (Don Berryman, Jazz Police). One of the
most educated of Twin Cities’ jazz artists, Dave earned degrees
from the U of M, New England Conservatory, and a doctorate from the
Eastman School of Music. Covering jazz and classical performance, he
has recorded with the George Russell Living Time Orchestra and the
Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. In the Twin Cities, Dave maintains his
classical chops with guest appearances with the Saint Paul Chamber
Orchestra, Minnesota Contemporary Ensemble, and Plymouth Music
Series. He’s a regular performer with the Phil Hey Quartet and
Source Code, as well as with Main Time. In his “day job” at St.
Olaf College in Northfield, Dave is “artist in residence” and
director of jazz ensembles. He released Solid/Liquid on
Artegra in 2003.
Chris
Olson is also a dedicated jazz educator. Since earning a
master’s degree in jazz studies/performance from the University of
North Texas, he’s taught guitar, jazz history and improvisation as
well as directing jazz ensembles at UW-Stevens Point, Wausau
Conservatory of Music, UW-Marathon County, and Inver Hills Community
College. Currently on the guitar faculty at McNally/Smith College in
St. Paul, he also teaches guitar lessons and jazz combos at the
MacPhail Center for Music and summer programs at the Shell Lake (WI)
Arts Center. Chris has performed with Bob Mintzer, Louis Bellson,
Terry Gibbs, Ira Sullivan, and Bobby Vinton. In addition to Meantime,
he is a regular member of the trio Framework, and is a frequent
performer at the French Press Jazz Café.
BassistKevin
Clementsreceived a music
degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. A member of the
Carleton College Adjunct faculty, these days he divides his time
between performing, teaching, and “flying airplanes” (actually
DC-10s). In addition to Maintime, Kevin has recently performed at
Rossi’s and the Artists Quarter as a member of the Laura Caviani
Trio, and is a first-call musician for many other Twin Cities’ jazz
artists.

master Jay Epstein, Cadence Magazine’s David
Lewis noted that “his dazzling cymbal and snare work extends the
lineage of Tony Williams and Jack DeJohnette.” For many years,
Epstein has managed time for the Phil Aaron Trio with a long-running
weekly gig at the Hotel Sofitel in Bloomington, and now at the new
Enjoy! Restaurant in Apple Valley. But any night of the week, you can
find Jay on the bandstand with the likes of Christine Rosholt, Gordon
Johnson, Laura Caviani, Bill Carrothers, Dean Magraw’s Red Planet,
Framework, and more. He released his own acclaimed recording Long
Ago on Igmod Records and appears on each of Gordy Johnson’s
Trios, among a long list of sideman credits. In his “spare”
time, Epstein teaches at Macalester College in St. Paul.
In the
Mean Time
While
the vibes-based quartet is hardly a new configuration in post bop
ensembles, replacing the usual piano with guitar creates more
celestial harmonies. And, at least in this case, a distinctly
European esthetic evolves through the inclusion of compositions from
Kenny Wheeler, Jan Garbarek, and William Walton; other gems from
Garbarek partner Keith Jarrett, Jaco Pastorius, Chick Corea, John
Scofield, and an original from Chris Olson round out the playlist.
Notes
Epstein, “We're very attracted to some of the European jazz
composers and the expansive and soaring imagery of their
compositions.” Such imagery is well served by the quartet’s
slinky charm on Jarrett’s “Spiral Dance,” Olson’s melodic
interpretation of Pastorius’ “Three Views of a Secret,”
Hagedorn’s luxuriant floatation on Garbarek’s “White Cloud/Blue
Sky,” and Clements’ penetrating ostinato on Wheeler’s “Foxy
Trot.” Among an hour’s worth of engaging harmonic etudes,
Jarrett’s “New Dance” stands out, with tandem vibes and guitar
simulating the resonance of steel drums, all brought into focus by
Epstein’s Caribbean flavored pulse.
