"Music is like a wheel, When you drive a car down a street, you might go down the same street, but you'll run over something today that wasn't there yesterday, so that puts a new look on that tire, and that's the way music is. When it goes over, it picks up something that wasn't there before." - Jimmy McGriff

Joshua Redman B3 Organ Trio at USC April 20th Print E-mail
Written by Ronaldo Oregano
Monday, 03 April 2006
ImageAfter more than a decade as one of jazz's most prominent solo saxophonists and acoustic bandleaders, Joshua Redman has combined his musical genius with two others to channel a vibrant new voice through ensemble form.

Since taking on the music world, Grammy-nominated Redman has performed with such world-renowned musicians as B.B. King and Christian McBride, claimed the title as Jazz Artist of the Year for two consecuitive years in Rolling Stone Magazine, and has released five critically acclaimed albums. In establishing himself as one of the most consistent and successful bandleaders, tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman has most recently collaborated with organist Sam Yahel and drummer Brian Blade to form the Joshua Redman Trio for more soulful grooves and edgy originals.

Free, straightforward saxophone playng combined with aggressive organ virtuosity and fiery-style drumming serves as the essence to the Joshua Redman Trio. While Sam Yahel's prowess on both piano and organ have made him a New York contemporary sensation, Brian Blade, a part of Redman's earlier MoodSwing band, has been deemed first-call drummer in both jazz and pop realms. As a unit, both Yahel and Blade are the ideal partners and interpretors of Redman's profound music. In an effort to avoid formula, musicianship and creativity emanate in the form of funk in the organ, swing sounding from the drums, and soulful saxophone cadenzas highlighting the trio's deep sense of musical inspiration.

The Joshua Redman Trio delivers a balance of traditional soul-jazz and new-groove, maintaining veteran Redman listeners. simultaneously attracting fresh crowds, and reinforcing Redman's place among the vanguard of contemporary artists.
