Stan Getz “There are four qualities essential to a great jazzman. They are taste, courage, individuality, and irreverence. These are the qualities I want to retain in my music.” - Stan Getz

Pensacola JazzFest 2006 is scheduled for April 1 - 2 in Pensacola's Seville Square Print E-mail

ImagePensacola JazzFest 2006, upcoming Saturday and Sunday April 1-2, promises to be an exciting event. We have already contracted with a New York quartet consisting of Russ Kassoff on piano, Harry Allen on saxophone, Gene Bertoncini on guitar and Jay Leonhart on bass. They are all tops in their field. We have again contracted with the Rebirth Brass Band of New Orleans, who were a big crowd-pleaser at last year’s JazzFest. Each of the New York group will have his own set, so with these players, plus winner of the local Phillips piano competition, vocalists Holly Shelton and Kitt Lough with their sets, the jazz ensembles from UWF and PJC plus a high school and middle school group, that should complete the main stage schedule. This will be our third year to sponsor the youth stage, featuring local and regional youth groups. This has been a good addition to the JazzFest line-up.

The Pensacola JazzFest, now in its 23rd year, is a free festival celebrating America’s unique musical contribution to the world. Total cost of the Pensacola JazzFest is approximately $60,000. The Jazz Society works all year to make this our annual gift to the community.

The 2006 Pensacola JazzFest poster design, Jammin' with the bird, was created by artist Paul Wierzbinski, a resident of Lexington, KY, who also has a residence in Seagrove Beach, FL. The 2006 posters will be available for sale at the 23rd Pensacola JazzFest, which takes place in Seville Square, located in historic downtown Pensacola, on Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2. Performances will run from noon to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, and from noon to 5:45 p.m. on Sunday. This free jazz festival is presented annually by the Jazz Society of Pensacola.

JazzFest memorabilia will be offered for sale at Pensacola JazzFest. Items include JazzFest Posters, T-Shirts with the poster image, note cards with the 2005 and 2006 poster images and coffee mugs. Other items include book bags, lighted wine glasses and beer mugs and CDs of the performing artists. Items are now available for purchase at upcoming Jazz Society events and the Jazz Society office, 17 S. Palafox Street, Suite 103, Pensacola, FL 32502. Call the Jazz Society office 850-433-8382 for details.

The Youth Stage will feature middle and high school bands from the Pensacola area. The schedule will be posted soon. This is the third year of presenting the Youth Stage as part of the Pensacola JazzFest. This will be the first year of presenting one high school and one middle school jazz band on the main stage, thereby allowing the majority of festival attendees to see the best of the youth bands. Note, too, that the winner of the Phillips/UWF piano competition will have a featured performance on the main stage. All this is done to encourage the young people, our future, in perpetuating jazz—America’s Music.
