"I don't care what kind of style a group plays as long as they settle into a groove where the rhythm keeps building instead of changing around. It's like the way an African hits a drum. He hits it a certain way, and after a period of time, you feel it more than you did when he first started. He's playing the same thing, but the quality is different -- it's settled into a groove. It's like settin' tobacco in a pipe. You put some heat on it and make it expand. After a while, it's there. It's tight." - Lou Donaldson

Born in Baltimore, Bill Frisell played clarinet throughout his childhood in Denver, Colorado. His interest in guitar began with his exposure to pop music on the radio. Soon, the Chicago Blues became a passion through the work of Otis Rush, B.B. King, Paul Butterfield and Buddy Guy. In high school, he played in bands covering pop and soul classics, James Brown and other dance material. Later, Bill studied music at the University of Northern Colorado before attending Berklee College of Music in Boston where he studied with John Damian, Herb Pomeroy and Michael Gibbs. In 1978, Frisell moved for a year to Belgium where he concentrated on writing music. In this period, he toured with Michael Gibbs and first recorded with German bassist Eberhard Weber. Bill moved to the New York City area in 1979 and stayed until 1989. He now lives in Seattle.

"When I was 16, I was listening to a lot of surfing music, a lot of English rock. Then I saw Wes Montgomery and somehow that kind of turned me around. Later, Jim Hall made a big impression on me and I took some lessons with him. I suppose I play the kind of harmonic things Jim would play but with a sound that comes from Jimi Hendrix", Frisell told Wire. Bill also lists Paul Motian, Thelonious Monk, Aaron Copland, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis and his teacher, Dale Bruning, as musical influences.

Born in New Orleans, Gregory Tardy began his musical career studying classical clarinet, subsequently turning to the tenor saxophone on which he explored many musical styles, especially falling in love with jazz. Tardy has played with Elvin Jones, the Neville Brothers, Nicholas Payton, Ellis Marsalis, Tom Harrell, Andrew Hill, Dave Douglas, John Patitucci, Wynton Marsalis, Jay McShann, Steve Coleman, James Moody and Rashied Ali, among others. His records as a leader include "Serendipity", "Hidden Light" and Abundance. He has played both tenor saxophone and clarinet in Bill Frisell's quintet featuring trumpeter Ron Miles and the rhythm section of Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen.

Kenny Wollesen grew up in Santa Cruz, California, moved to San Francisco early in his career and has since lived and worked in New York City. He has performed regularly with Bill Frisell as a member of his trios, the New Quartet and his septet with which he appeared on the album Blues Dream. He has played with John Zorn, Marc Ribot, John Medeski, Tom Waits, John Scofield, Jesse Harris and the Ferdinandos, Sean Lennon, Mitchell Froom, Big John Patton, John Lurie, Jim Hall, Jessica Williams and Myra Melford. In addition to his live performances with Frisell, he currently tours with trumpeter Steven Bernstein's group Sex Mob, and occasionally with Zorn's Electric Masada. He also leads his own band, The Wollesens.

Bassist Tony Scherr was born in New Haven, Connecticut and is self taught. He is best known as a bass player (both acoustic and electric), but he also plays slide and electric guitar. Tony has lived in New York for many years. He stays busy recording and touring in many bands including Sex Mob, Jesse Harris and the Ferdinandos, Joey Baron's Killer Joey and The Maria Schneider Orchestra. In addition, Tony has played with John Scofield, John Lurie and The Lounge Lizards, Dakota Staton, Woody Herman, Chris Brown and Kate Fenner, Slowpoke, Al Grey, Jon Faddis, The Village Vanguard Orchestra, Sophie B. Hawkins, Junior Cook, Brad Shepik & the Commuters, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Stanley Turrentine, Steve Kuhn and Tricky. Tony also writes and sings his own songs accompanying himself on guitar. This material can be heard on his self-produced CD entitled, Come Around. Tony has contributed to film scores by John Lurie, Evan Lurie, Howard Shore and with members of Sonic Youth.

Ron has recorded as a leader for Gramavision with two releases, Woman’s Day and My Cruel Heart. More recently he recorded a CD, entitled Heaven, a duo recording for Sterling Circle Records on which Bill is his guest.
