Tierney Sutton returns to Birdland, with the band December 14th-17th Print E-mail

ImageJazz vocalist Tierney Sutton and her band return to Birdland in New York City where she and her band performed and recorded live in front of a select audience of friends and fans in March. The resulting critically acclaimed album, I’m with the Band is Tierney’s first live recording and her fifth Telarc release. This project is more than the result of one night, but of a decade of working and touring with the same band, which includes Christian Jacob, Trey Henry, Ray Brinker, and Kevin Axt. Educated at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Tierney became a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocal Competition in 1998. Her first solo CD, Introducing Tierney Sutton, was released to rave reviews and nominated for a 1999 Indie Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. On Unsung Heroes, released by Telarc in March 2000 , she took popular jazz standards that are usually performed instrumentally. Tierney’s second Telarc project, Blue in Green, released in June 2001, was an album of music written by Bill Evans. Something Cool, released in September 2002, quickly rose to #1 on the jazz charts and continues to garner extensive airplay across the U.S. In March 2004, with the release of Dancing in the Dark, which debuted in the Billboard Jazz top ten and remained on the charts for over 15 weeks.

In June 2005, Tierney won JazzWeek’s Vocalist of the Year Award. An active educator, she has served in the Jazz Studies Department at the University of Southern California, as well as giving workshops and clinics throughout the world.Image

Christian Jacob
Christian Jacob is a classically trained French pianist who crossed over to jazz and is now living in Los Angeles, CA. Christian has recorded two CDs for Concord Records, Maynard Ferguson Presents Christian Jacob and Time Lines. Christian also records, composes and arranges for many big bands and orchestras, as well as performing with his own trio, Flora Purim and the Tierney Sutton Band. In late 2004, Christian released his first independent trio recording, Styne & Mine. The recording reached #3 in the Jazz charts, and Christian is already in the process of writing for his next recording.

Kevin Axt
Bassist Kevin Axt is a 20-year veteran of the LA music scene. He has performed, recorded and toured with artists as diverse as Natalie Cole, Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, Hank Jones, Phil Woods, Toni Tennille, Lalo Schifrin, Vinx, Kitaro, Bobby Shew, Chuck Mangione, Jack Jones, Barry Manilow, Dave Koz, David Benoit, Bob Florence, Jack Sheldon, and Melissa Manchester to name just a few. A resident of the San Fernando Valley, Kevin continues to be one of the busiest bassists in LA.

Ray Brinker
Image Drummer Ray Brinker is an alumnus of North Texas State University’s Jazz Studies program, having performed with the school’s Grammy Award nominated One O’Clock Lab Band before joining trumpeter Maynard Ferguson on a multi-year world tour. Residing in Los Angeles since 1986, Ray is active in the LA studio scene. His recording and touring credits include a diverse list of artists: Michel LeGrand, Joe Pass, Jack Sheldon, Woody Herman, Les Brown, Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, Randy Brecker, Diane Shure, Johnny Mathis, Steve Allen, Frank Gambale, Brian Setzer, David Lee Roth, Cinderella, Pat Benatar, Phil Woods, Natalie Cole. Ray’s most recent credits include the Christian Jacob Trio CD, Styne and Mine, Ray Charles’ 2005 8-time Grammy Award winning Album of the Year, Genius Loves Company, and Joe Cocker’s 2005 CD release Heart and Soul, as well as film soundtracks Shrek, Chicken Run, The Alamo, Brother Bear, and Ray: The Ray Charles Story. When not performing, Ray is an active teacher and clinician.

Trey Henry
Trey Henry is one of the most in-demand bassists in LA and has worked with everyone including Maynard Ferguson, Michel Legrand, Andre Previn, Henry Mancini, Herbie Hancock, Julie Andrews and Merv Griffin to name just a few. The list of recordings Trey has done is extensive and ranges from The American Jazz Philharmonic with Jack Elliot, Phil Woods and Ray Brown to The Jack Sheldon Big Band.

Produced by Elaine Martone, I’m with the Band is Tierney’s first live recording and her fifth Telarc release. Return with her and the band to Birland, December 14th-17th. With two sets per night, at 9:00 and 11:00 for $40 a seat (plus $10 minnimum food/drink order).
