“Jazz is a good barometer of freedom… In its beginnings, the United States of America spawned certain ideals of freedom and independence through which, eventually, jazz was evolved, and the music is so free that man people say it is the only unhampered, unhindered expression of complete freedom yet produced in this country.” -Duke Ellington

Founded in 2001 in Denver, Colorado, FUNK SHUI, pronounced Funk Shway, is Al Buffone III (percussion), Mike Lepine (drums/vocals), Andreas Taber (guitar/vocals), Ced Forsyth (bass) and Mark Strivings (saxophone). As musicians looking to expose their finesse while realizing the need for order, they choose to celebrate life with the richness and freedom of Jazz and the syncopation of Funk.

Al Buffone III (Percussion)
There are many wonderful things you can say about Al but you can distill them down to this: THE MAN HAS PASSION. He is easily the most animated individual of the Funk Shway family. At times, it appears that all four limbs are moving to create this cacophony of sounds ... delicious. And the look of concentration.

Andreas Taber (Guitars, Vocals)
Andreas began his musical career in Germany playing in a Country Band . This was not exactly the cat's meow but the sound was close. After having completed his college studies, he formed Andreas' Fault, a Jazz/Rock band in Columbus, Ohio. This group recorded a CD of songs, some of which achieved moderate airplay.
But that was all then....

Ced Forsyth (Bass)
Ced Forsyth plays electric bass with Funk Shui and upright bass with the Pearl Street Jazz Band. During the Oktoberfest season he is in high demand....as a tuba player! Ced has been playing professionally in the Denver area since the early 1980's.

Mark Strivings (Saxophone)
Mark is Mr. Saxophone extraordinaire who graces this fine city with his presence by way of Flag Staff, Arizona. One of the most unassuming individuals you will ever meet, he is always willing to give it a go with a smile..

Mike Lepine (Drums, Vocals)
Mike has been a professional musician since the age of 17. He studied music at the University of Northern Colorado and spent three years in the jazz studies department as a percussion major. He has performed locally for the past 20 years with artists like Laura Neuman, Freddy Rodriguez, Sam Mayfield, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Lannie Garrett, Brandy Herbert, Gordon Simms, Tonk Edwards, Ricardo Pena, and Rob Mullins. He has also been involved in the formation of several local Funk R&B groups such as Jo Mama and Bump city.
Mike brings his love of world-beat rhythms, jazz and funk to Funk Shui. As one of the few singing drummers in the area, Mike finds his contribution to the Funk Shui sound doubly rewarding.
