the Detroit International Jazz Festival over labor day week-end
features Randy Weston's African Rhythms, The McCoy Tyner Trio , The
Zawinul Syndicate, Joey DeFrancesco, Geri Allen, Toots Thielemans,
David 'Fathead' Newman, T.S. Monk, Bettye LaVette, Dr. John, and
Medeski - Martin & Wood and many more.
The 2005 Detroit
International Jazz Fest's official after parties and jam sessions will
take place nightly at Bert's on Broadway located
in downtown Detroit at the crossroads of Randolph and Broadway,
within walking distance of the festival and three blocks from Hart
Plaza. Cutting Contests and old-fashioned Battle Royals join the
festival proper as Detroit jazz musicians take on visiting
stars. According to Malfitano, the festival wanted to officially
recognize Bert's (Bert Dearing, prop.) and the local Detroit jazz
club scene for all they do for local jazz throughout the year
by incorporating the after fest jam sessions into the festival proper.
Acting on advice that came from the Detroit jazz community during his
annual State of the Fest address at Music Hall in April, local
jazz pros suggested a Detroit Jazz Scene vs. the Jazz Fest
Headliners in a nightly cutting contest and jam session sanctioned
by the festival. Malfitano turned the suggestions into
reality. "The idea was irresistible”, said Malfitano, “and impossible
to ignore.” “Thanks to Bert Dearing and his team, nightly jams will
become an important part of this year's festival and all future
festivals. It's going to be an amazing experience and a festival
highlight that’s long overdue. Detroit has some of the greatest jazz
musicians in the history of this music and they deserve this
opportunity to serve notice on the rest of the international jazz
community!"
