Dee Dee Bridgewater to headline inaugural Ocean Beach Jazz Festival |

KSDS (JAZZ 88) continues commitment to bring world-class Jazz to
San Diego with the announcement of the First Annual Jazz 88 Ocean Beach
Jazz Festival.
The September 25th event headlines the
incomparable Ms. Dee Dee Bridgewater. Few entertainers have ever
commanded such depth of artistry in every medium. Fewer still have been
rewarded with Broadway’s coveted Tony Award (Best Featured Actress in a
Musical – The Wiz), nominated for the London theater’s West End
equivalent, the Laurence Olivier Award (Best Actress in a Musical –
Lady Day), won two Grammy® Awards (1998’s Best Jazz Vocal
Performance
and Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocal for “Cottontail” – Slide
Hampton, arranger – “Dear Ella”), and France’s 1998 top honor Victoire
de la Musique (Best Jazz Vocal Album).
Also appearing will be
the Red Holloway Quartet. James “Red” Holloway has had a star-studded
career -- performing with Dexter Gordon, Lionel Hampton, Jack McDuff,
Billie Holiday, Ben Webster, Sonny Rollins, and Lester Young. He's best
known for his partnership with Sonny Stitt and currently is one of the
busiest musicians on the international stage.
Bonerama, “a funky
brass band from New Orleans, Louisiana also will make their first San
Diego appearance. You ain't heard nothing like it. A powerful and fresh
sound unlike any New Orleans has ever produced.”
Sue Palmer’s
Motel Swing Orchestra revs things up. The popular San Diego performer
brings the entire orchestra to the festival. San Diego' s Queen of
Boogie Woogie, Sue Palmer, has amazed audiences all over the world with
her unique style and phenomenal left hand.
The festival opens at
noon with the Jazz 88 All Star Band featuring a top notch crew of local
musicians including numerous Jazz 88 announcers: Barry Farrar, Jr.; J.
Otis Williams, David Mosby and Cynthia Hammond.
