Fresh New Voices @ Catalina's: Sara Leib and Julie Hardy
“More and more the new voices
emerging these days are the voices of complete musicians. The best of
them are comfortable with or without words, functioning as composers
and interpreters, arrangers and improvisers. Julie Hardy is one of
these voices.” -Bob Blumenthal, Grammy Awarded Jazz Writer
“[Sara Leib] reinterprets
the template of the standard into something that seasoned jazz
enthusiasts and crossover fans from the Norah Jones camp will both be
blown away by...one of those touch of genius phenomenons...” - Jamie
Rattner, of Northeast Performer Magazine
On
Monday, September 19th (sets at 8:30 & 10:30pm) Catalina Bar and
Grill will showcase two up and coming vocal jazz talents; Sara Leib,
who has just returned to LA from a three week South African tour and
Julie Hardy, Fresh Sound New Talent recording artist from New York
City.
Both artists will share two sets featuring their unique
abilities as composers, improvisers and arrangers. A vast array of
material will be presented from recent CD releases; Leib’s “It’s Not
the Moon” and Hardy’s “A Moment’s Glance” which include standards,
original compositions and modern pieces. These vocalists will be backed
by internationally acclaimed musicians Joe LaBarbera on drums, Darek
Oles on bass and New York City emerging talent Randy Ingram on piano
who is a former resident of Laguna Beach and USC graduate. Catalina’s
is located at 6725 Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood. $10 cover, drink
minimum.
Jazz vocalist and
composer Julie Hardy has
recently released her debut CD, “A Moment’s
Glance” on Fresh Sound New Talent records and is attracting rave
reviews. Christopher Loudon of Jazz Times comments that, “Hardy lives,
like [Kurt] Elling and [Bobby] McFerrin, in a musical world of her own,
and it is a marvelously dynamic place.” Her recent performances have
been received enthusiastically by sold out crowds on the East Coast.
Artists such as Brad Mehldau and Kurt Rosenwinkel launched their
recording careers with Fresh Sound New Talent, and as the only American
vocalist currently signed to the label, Julie is off to a promising
start.
Julie has performed across the country at major clubs
and festivals including The Jazz Standard, Sweet Rhythm, formerly known
as Sweet Basil’s, Jordan Hall, and The Clark Terry Jazz Festival and
was invited to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C to participate in
the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program and the prestigious Jazz Academy
Snowmass in Aspen, CO directed by Christian McBride. She is well on her
way to becoming one of the most important voices of the modern jazz.
Young
vocalist Sara Leib has been
taking the jazz world by storm. Hailed for
her instrumentally-motivated improvisation and her natural presence,
Leib’s independently released debut album “It’s Not the Moon” is
receiving widespread attention.
Just back from a three week
South African tour, Leib has performed with Dave Liebman, Tamir
Hendelman, and Kristin Korb, and participated in JAS Jazz Aspen
Snowmass with Christian McBride. Since receiving a Downbeat Student
award for Outstanding Vocalist in 2002, Leib has performed at the Glenn
Miller Jazz Festival in Tamana, Japan, performed and taught at the
Standard Bank Youth Jazz Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa, and
performed in Boston, New York City, Chicago, Memphis, Berkeley, and her
home town of Los Angeles. In the words of Bob Agnew and the LA Jazz
Scene, “Sara Leib is a young, evolving talent and with the future of
jazz in her hands...the tomorrows of jazz will be secure.”
