"I visited New York in '63, intending to move there, but I noticed that what I valued about jazz was being discarded. I ran into `out-to-lunch' free jazz, and the notion that groove was old-fashioned. All around the United States, I could see jazz becoming linear, a horn-player's world. It made me realize that we were not jazz musicians; we were territory musicians in love with all forms of African-American music. All of the musicians I loved were territory musicians, deeply into blues and gospel as well as jazz. " - Joe Sample

Lullabies for Children and Adults Print E-mail

ImageAs a jazz listener, exposing our children to music that enhances their listening palette and enriches their musical experiences, one can easily find a suited selections within the plethora of wonderful jazz recordings we are blessed with in the digital age. The question is, what about bedtime? Some good choices may be Stanley Turrentine’s Ballads or Karrin Allyson’s John Coltrane’s Ballads, but what if we wanted some good old fashioned lullabies that are not sung by children and break the mold of traditional lullaby selections. The choices are slim to none. This obviously was the plight of Minnesota based Jazz pianist Sean Turner.

ImageBeing a composer and pianist, Turner decided to produce a lullaby CD of original melodies for his children to enjoy. Since he would be listening to the music as well, he wanted the melodies to be simple and lyrical to little ears, yet be “blanketed” in a more sophisticated orchestral sound that an adult would enjoy.

Turner definitely achieved this and more. “Lullabies for Children and Adults,” is a flowing texturally superior children's release, featuring soothing orchestral compositions, timbered with jazz overtones. Certainly, appealing to the discerning adult that is a part of the bedtime process.

The disc has already won the prestigious “Parents Choice” award, clearly adding validity to the release in the children's arena. Being a parent myself, I appreciated Turner’s fresh and appealing approach.
