Eric Dolphy: “When you hear music, after it’s over, it’s gone, in the air, you can never capture it again.”

Two red-hot string men, guitarist Adam Rogers and bassist John Patitucci join forces for two nights of sublime interplay at the Dakota, June 21-22. There’s no better way to celebrate the Solstice and get your ears in tune for the remainder of the Twin Cities Hot Summer Jazz Festival!

Adam Rogers, known at least in New York as one of the best of the current crop of hot guitarists, has been best known as a sideman for the likes of Norah Jones, Ravi Coltrane, Michael Brecker, and of course, John Patitucci, as well as a founding member of the fusion collective, Lost Tribe. He has also released three solid recordings as leader, most recently Apparition (Criss Cross, 2005) in the company of Edward Simon, Scott Colley and Clarence Penn. All About Jazz’s Phil DiPietro described Rogers as a “mind-boggling linear improviser…cable of navigating and renavigating the harmonic roadmaps of tunes on the fly…”

Dubbed by the LA Times as “one of the most technically astute bassists around,” Grammy-winning electric/acoustic bassist John Patitucci cut his teeth as a member of Chick Corea’s Elektric Band and Akoustic Band. His credits include playing and recording with Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz, Freddie Hubbard, Roy Haynes, and Danilo Pérez; his diverse musical experiences run the gamut from Dizzy Gillespie and Herbie Hancock to B.B. King and Bon Jovi. He has also worked with great film composers such as Ry Cooder, Henry Mancini, John Williams, and Mark Isham.

Growing up in Brooklyn, John Patitucci began playing the electric bass at 10, and from soul and rock he moved into blues, jazz, and classical music. At age 12 he wrote his first compositions, and by 15, he started to play the acoustic bass, shortly thereafter taking up the piano as well. It is his experience singing that truly informs his music, however: "I always sang with my family while growing up in Brooklyn but didn't think I'd change the world with my singing. I sing in my head, sometimes even write that way, and I always try to achieve a singing quality on my instrument.” Patitucci’s self-titled debut as a solo artist climbed to #1 on the Billboard Jazz charts in the early 1980s. In 1986, he was voted "Most Valuable Player" on acoustic bass by his peers in the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS). He’s also been recognized as Best Jazz Bassist in Guitar Player Magazine's 1992, 1994 and 1995 Readers' Polls, and Best Jazz Bassist in Bass Player Magazine's 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996 Readers' Polls. To date he has recorded 11 albums as leader of his own ensembles, including his most recent release, Songs, Stories & Spirituals (Concord), has earned 11 Grammy nominations, and has won the award twice.

For over 20 years, John Patitucci has been particularly involved in Brazilian music, performing with Ivan Lins, Milton Nascimento, Astrud and Joao Gilberto, Dori Caymmi, Joao Bosco, Luciana Souza, and others. An experienced educator whose credits include the Thelonious Monk Institute and the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program, he recently was appointed Associate Professor at New York’s City College. In the past year he has toured with the Wayne Shorter Quartet as well as in a duo with Adam Rogers.

For these two nights—June 21-22, fingers will be flying on the Dakota stage!

John Patitucci and Adam Rogers will play two sets each night, 8:00 pm and 10 pm, June 21-22, at the Dakota, 1010 Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis; reservations suggested (www.dakotacooks.com). Patitucci takes his trio (Adam Rogers on guitar, Nasheet Waits on drums) to California, with stops at Catalina’s in Hollywood (June 23-26; www.catalinajazzclub.com); the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz (June 27th; www.kuumbwajazz.org); and Yoshi’s in Oakland (June 28th; www.yoshis.com).
