"Vibe Queen" Lalo
"I never intended to become a vibraphone player, but my desire to communicate through melody as well as rhythm led me to the thing, and now, well, it looks as if our love is here to stay." -Nick Mancini

In a three day Vibraphone festival Cornelia Street Cafe presents five young New York Vibes players: Nick Mancini, Tim Collins, Dan McCarthy, Lalo, and Tom Beckham. They are all leading their own groups including players Ingrid Jensen, trumpet; Myron Walden, alto sax and Chris Cheek, saxophones.

WEEKEND VIBES: NICK MANCINI COLLECTIVE & TIM COLLINS GROUP
(Nick Mancini Collective; Nick Mancini, vibraphone; Matthias Bublath, organ; Dave Berger, drums;
Tim Collins Group; Tim Collins, vibraphone; Ingrid Jensen, trumpet/flugelhorn; Matt Blostein, alto sax; Matt Clohesy, bass; Simon Lott, drums)

9:00PM Nick Mancini Collective

The musicians of NICK MANCINI COLLECTIVE vibraphonist Nick Mancini, organist Matthias Bublath and drummer Dave Berger, use the music of Horace Silver as a jumping-off point for their fresh, incisive and occasionally comedic arrangements.

A dynamic fixture of the NYC jazz scene, Mancini decisively leads this energetic trio through a tightly knit set of burning, straight-ahead jazz flights, moody vamps, gospel romps and Eurodance breakdowns.
Witness the vibrant and evocative nature of this trio of masters as they deliver a continually evolving stream of musical settings that are all at once spontaneous, reminiscent and unmarked.

10:30PM Tim Collins Group featuring Ingrid Jensen

"An exceptionally bright and brisk live jazz group featuring vivid jazz vibes, lighting up a full-spectrum sound. Incorporating influences from Funk, Rock and Latin styles with sassy backbeats and forthright piano punctuation, this east coast group is one that jazz connoisseurs will be talking about. With outstanding compositional integrity, this is truly a meeting of voices, a group performance with one, cohesive vision. "

WEEKEND VIBES:DAN MCCARTHY & LALO
(Dan McCarthy Group; Dan McCarthy, vibraphone; Myron Walden, alto saxophone; Matt Wigton, bass; Greg Ritchie, drums; Lalo; Lalo, vibraphone; TBA)

9:00PM Dan McCarthy group featuring Myron Walden

After working his way to being one of the top vibraphonists in Canada, Dan McCarthy made the move to New York, where he has picked up where he left off in Toronto. Being in New York for only nine nonths, Dan has already started making a name for himself by performing at numerous jazz clubs around Manhattan. Dan will be performing original material, as well as a few wisely chosen standards. Featured on this gig will be saxophonist Myron Walden, a veteran of the New York jazz scene, who will also be joining the trio as they go into the studio to record their debut album in two weeks.
Look for the record at the end of August.

10:30PM Lalo

"If Lionel Hampton joined '80s King Crimson, he might've played vibraphone like Lalo."
-Village Voice

"Lalo uses her music to open the doors to someplace ethereal and filled with kaleidoscopic color. Call it a celestial rock/jazz/world music symphony."
-Indie-Music

The "Vibe Queen"
Vibraphonist and composer Lalo fuses traditional jazz with world music influences and a modern edge. She has recently been featured on NPR Weekend Edition Sunday, in Jazztimes magazine, and on the cover of Womenrock.com. Jazziz magazine lists her as among the "20 Fine Vibists" in the world and New York's Village Voice has dubbed her the "Vibe Queen". Recent appearances include the Blue Note, South by Southwest, and the German Music Fair.
A native of Savannah, Georgia, Lalo commenced her studies with world-renowned vibraphonist Mike Mainieri and began performing in festivals and clubs in the southeastern United States while still in high school. She subsequently enrolled in Berklee College of Music and graduated Summa Cum Laude two years later. While at Berklee, Lalo toured throughout Europe and the United States with the group Dzaesmin as a performer, composer, and co-leader. In 1999 she premiered an original composition with the Savannah Symphony Orchestra as a featured soloist and subsequently began touring colleges and universities on the East Coast. Later that year she moved to New York City and began performing with a ten-piece percussion ensemble led by Cyro Baptista (percussionist with Sting, Paul Simon, Cassandra Wilson).

WEEKEND VIBES: TOM BECKHAM GROUP
(Diego Voglino, drums; Tom Beckham, vibraphone; Chris Cheek, saxophones; Bryn Roberts, piano; John Herbert, bass)
"Beckham's warmly melodic writing is well served by his approach, one situated between the slow-burn soul of Milt Jackson and the pianism of Gary Burton."
-Jazztimes Magazine

"When he takes the stage he invariably amplifies the album1s energy. I1ve seen him stress his instrument1s percussive side, and in doing so, stretch a solo into a trance-like soliloquy."
