A musical tradition still gaining momentum after 27 incomparable years, the Playboy Jaz
Festival continues to present the best in jazz, blues and world music when it returns to
the historic Hollywood Bowl with a two-day lineup of music legends and emerging performers. Cuba's
octogenarian Israel "Cachao" Lopez, the founding father of the mambo, will surely bring the crowd
to its feet on Saturday. He joins smooth Grammy-nominated saxophonist Boney James, the piano-driven Ramsey Lewis
Trio, rugged blues guitarist Keb' Mo' and the Joshua Redman Elastic Band, a more electric, groove-based platform
for the saxophonist to shine. Organ player Joey DeFrancesco and the Kenny Burrell Quartet also perform a
special set to celebrate the life and artistry of the late Jimmy Smith, the undisputed master of the jazz organ.
The Jazz Tap Ensemble and Caravan Project, a group of young dancers and students, makes its debut. Sunday's
lineup, headlined by guitarist George Benson, also features New Orleans' native son Dr. John on keys and the
Saxophone Summit, an ensemble composed of three modern masters of the instrument: Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano and
Dave Liebman. L.A.'s 45-member daKah Hip Hop Orchestra, led by master MC Double G. Sunday, gets the crowd
dancing, and the party ends with the big band stylings of Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band.
