UPCOMING EVENTS

Friday May 13-"Jazz in the Country" featuring Nashville steel guitarist Doug Jernigan with a group of Pensacola's finest Jazz musicians for an evening of jazz entertainment at Chumuckla's Farmers Opry. Dinner, optional, features pecan smoked roast pork, fresh turnips, squash and corn-- food you can't get in town. Cost of the dinner is $9.50. Opens at 4:30 p.m. until show-time. Jazz program begins promptly at 7:00 p.m. Cost for the show is $12.50. For reservations for dinner and/or show, call Farmers Opry at 994-6000. JSOP has secured a small bus for the trip. For bus reservations, call JSOP office 433-8382 or Roger Villines, 479-9983. Driving directions are simple. Drive highway 90 east over the Escambia River bridge. At first traffic-light past the Escambia River fill, turn left. This is Chumuckla highway. Continue on Chumuckla Highway approximately 17 miles until you see the lighted sign for Farmers Opry on your left. Turn and go about 1/4 mile to the Farmers Opry building and campground.

Monday May 16 Jazz Gumbo featuring bluesman Steve Cheseborough. Steve is an author and entertainer who has performed on the Delta Queen Mississippi River Steamboats. He is a native of upstate New York who moved to the Mississippi Delta to absorb the blues tradition. His book, now in second printing, related to Mississippi Blues Shrines. We are pleased to have him with us. On the following night, he will perform at "Blues on the Beach."

Monday June 20 Jazz Gumbo featuring guitarist Mark Guest of Bay St. Louis, MS with bassist and tubist. For the second set on the program violinist Johnny Gimble and the Gimble Family Band. Mark has played for JazzFest Goes On night. Johnny has been featured at Pensacola JazzFest, Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival. He has been a regular on the PBS Austin City Limits and has appeared in all of Willie Nelson's movies.Now a Texas resident, Johnny has vacationed in Pensacola many times so we're lucky to have him and family join us for this Jazz Gumbo.

Monday July 18 Jazz Gumbo features Vocalist Kitt Lough and group.

Monday August 15, Jazz Gumbo features Saxophonist Jim Andrews

Saturday August 20 "JazzFest Goes On" night. This is the Jazz Society's semi-annual fundraiser at Seville Quarter to support Pensacola JazzFest, a FREE all-jazz festival scheduled for Saturday and Sunday April 1-2, 2006. The Jazz Society fills three rooms with jazz. Time is 6-9 p.m. Artists and cost to be announced.

Monday September 19 Jazz Gumbo features Violinist Tom Morley

Monday October 15 Jazz Gumbo features Trumpeter Longineu Parsons in tribute to Louis Armstrong

Monday November 21 Jazz Gumbo features Saxophonist Joe Occhipinti leading a Dixieland Group. There will be a dance floor for patrons and a demonstration of swing dancing by the Swing Kids.

Monday December 5 Jingle Jazz led by vocalist-trumpeter Paul Bruketa. This is the Jazz Society's annual event opening the Holiday Season. The music will feature jazzy holiday tunes. Occasionally we are visited by a musical Santa Claus. Time is 6:00 p.m. at Seville Quarter, Phineas Phogg's room. Admission is by donation. Various musicians participate in this listener-friendly event. You may see some of your favorite artists perform.

Jazz Gumbo events are a tasty mix of music and a gathering of friends. Location: Seville Quarter, Phineas Phogg's Room, 130 East Government Street in downtown Pensacola. Time: 6 p.m. Cost of admission is $5 for JSOP memebers and $7 for public. Admission entitles one to a bowl of delicious seafood gumbo.
