“Every tune that I’ve written so far has a meaning and a story within it that I want the whole group to capture ... A lot of guys, when they play, are not thinking about what they’re actually playing; they’re just thinking about maybe the chords, or how the rhythm changes, or something like that, but I really try to tell a story and I want the group that plays my tunes to try to see what I saw when I wrote them.” - Grachan Moncur III

The Spirit of Django Reinhardt 2005 Print E-mail
Written by Ronaldo Oregano

Image"The Spirit of Django Reinhardt" 2005 - Hot Swing Jazz - ! returns to Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall with special guest Paquito D'Rivera on July 27 at 7 pm.

The SPIRIT of DJANGO REINHARDT Concert event returns to Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall for the 3rd year having played to sold-out houses and having built a following of loyal fans of the music of legendary French gypsy Guitarist, Django. Producers, Pat Philips & Ettore Stratta have assembled a cast that will undoubtedly keep the audience on the edge of its seats and to their feet during this hot swinging, romantic/melodic evening of musical heaven.

With Dorado Schmitt gypsy legend from the Lorraine region of France on Guitar leading the Concert of Django favorites, standards, some original material, sometimes breaking into romantic song, full of personality, and authenticity, the concert is in great hands!

Dorado is joined by Virtuoso Violinist Florin Niculescu, originally from Rumania and living in Paris, coming to Lincoln Center for the first time. Together they make musical history. Ludovic Beier, young Accordion whiz also from Paris returns by popular demand ! Dorado's son, Samson Schmitt on Rhythm Guitar and a star in Europe, joins "Dad". Newcomer, young Joscho Stephan hails from Germany and in his trio is joined also by his Dad, Gunter Stephan, on Rhythm Guitar and Max Schaaf on Bass. He will dazzle you with his technique and mastery of the guitar. And our very own Brian TorfF, who toured years with the great Stephane Grappelli, will be on Bass with Dorado and gang joined by tasty drummer/percussionist David Sillerman, part of the event for the first time.

Add to all this Latin/Jazz Superstar, Paquito D'Rivera who will be the Special Guest of the evening. Paquito has had the pleasure of performing with some of the above before and is eager to step in again and join the musical fun. There will be pure "joy" in Alice Tully Hall on July 27th at 7 PM.

The Producers started The DJANGO REINHARDT FESTIVAL almost 6 years ago at Birdland in New York and found there was a big Å’underground' and Å’overground' of fans of the music of Django Reinhardt. With the success of the Festival came The Spirit of Django Concert and the opportunity for the American audiences to fall in love with many of the European artists who had never before performed in the US such as Dorado, Ludovic, and Samson So they have been returning and are joined by "new faces" in the world of the music of Django.
