Improvised Explosive Device will perform at the Acadia Cafe in Minneapolis, Friday, April 08, 2005 - 8:00 PM to 12:00 AM

IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICE blows up LEONARD BERNSTEIN: a celebration and re-calibration of an American master. A multi-media time warp twisting and turning images and music from West Side Story . . . you won't Imagebelieve your eyes or your ears. Features James Patrick on laptop, Michael Ferrier (Electropolis) on sax and electronics, and Chris Cunningham (James Chance, Anton Fier, Gavin Friday, Marianne Faithfull) on imagery and guitarish items. "(IED walks) the line between improvising structured rhythms and melodies and pure sound painting. (They) leave traditional musical taxonomy a bit at a loss. . . a luscious soundscape; by the end of their set, I was drifting right along with them. . . ." Paul Cantrell, Minnesota Public Radio

Before IED, ANTHONY COX will perform a solo bass set. Anthony is one of the world's most incredible bassists, having gigged with Stan Getz, Joe Lovano, Steve Lacy, Billy Higgins, Daniel Humair, and many more. "His bass sound is full of beauty and warmth and his ability to accompany and still add very creative ideas into whatever music he is playing is remarkable. He is equally comfortable playing chord changes with a Stan Getz or Kenny Wheeler or playing open music with a Dewey Redman or Geri Allen. His technique is absolutely awesome and his solos are full of wit and wisdom." Peter Madsen, allaboutjazz.com

And opening this world-class evening at the Acadia will be cellist MICHELLE KINNEY (Henry Threadgill, Julius Hemphill, John Zorn, Sheryl Crow, etc) and the amazing dancer/choreographer LEAH NELSON, who will collaborate on a unique improvisation.
