Dave Karr's Annual Christmas Sound Off at the Artists Quarter Print E-mail
Written by Andrea Canter, Contributing Editor
Saturday, 25 December 2004

ImageA Christmas Night tradition at St. Paul's Artists Quarter, multi-instrumentalist Dave Karr and his quartet can help you recover from an overdose of relatives, eggnog, and holiday shopping. A native New Yorker, Karr got hooked on jazz listening to some of the great jazz legends, including Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Moving to the Twin Cities in his twenties, Karr has been a fixture on the metro jazz scene for nearly 50 years, composing and producing music for radio and TV since 1970. With Mark Henderson, he formed Mark & Dave Music and Sound Design in 1996. Karr has performed with numerous bands, symphony orchestras, Broadway shows, and recording sessions. Around town, Dave performs frequently with his own quartet at the Dakota, Artists Quarter, and other venues, andwith other musicians, from vocalists (Connie Evingson, Cookie Coleman, Lucia Newell) to small bands (Pete Whitman's X-Tet) to big bands (Jazz Mn Big Band). Most often heard on tenor, flute, and clarinet, Karr also breaks out the baritone for his Gerry Mulligan tribute band, Mulligan Stew. Wrap up your holiday with one of the sweetest horns around, backed by the best of Twin Cities' rhythm sections.

The Artists Quarter is located in the lower level of the Hamm building in downtown St.Paul, 7th Place and St. Peter, www.mnjazz.com.  Sets start at 9 pm, $10 cover.
