"I visited New York in '63, intending to move there, but I noticed that what I valued about jazz was being discarded. I ran into `out-to-lunch' free jazz, and the notion that groove was old-fashioned. All around the United States, I could see jazz becoming linear, a horn-player's world. It made me realize that we were not jazz musicians; we were territory musicians in love with all forms of African-American music. All of the musicians I loved were territory musicians, deeply into blues and gospel as well as jazz. " - Joe Sample

JazzMN Big Band’s “Made in Minnesota” at Ted Mann, November 13th Print E-mail
Written by Andrea Canter, Contributing Editor
Tuesday, 09 November 2004

ImageSince 1998, Minnesota’s big band enthusiasts have had the fortune to hear performances by the JazzMN Big Band. Formed to “promote, preserve and perpetuate jazz, America's indigenous art music, through performance, historical preservation, and education," this non-profit group is an amalgam of the best band artists in the Twin Cities. Over its five seasons, the JazzMn Big Band has presented a who’s who list of guest artists, including Arturo Sandoval, Phil Woods, James Moody, Dave Weckl, Terry Gibbs, and Buddy DeFranco. The band released its first self-titled CD on the Artegra label in 2000. Under the leadership of Dr. Doug Snapp, the JazzMN Big Band’s 2004-05 season features some well-established, if not all well-known brass specialists in concert with some of the best of the area’s vocalists.

“Made in Minnesota” is the November 13th installment of the Big Band’s season. This concert will feature works by some of the Twin Cities’ renowned composers and arrangers, including Lester Young, Maria Schneider, Dean Sorenson, Adi Yeshaya, Laura Caviani, Pete Whitman, Steve Devich, and John Ahern. Local vocal diva Charmin Michelle and young upcoming vocal star Jose James will join the band, along with local legend Percy Hughes on sax. As always, the band will start off with some charts of big band standards but the focus this evening is on our home grown Minnesota talent.

Image With a style reminiscent of earlier Billie Holiday and Nancy Wilson (whom she “channeled” at the recent Selby Avenue Jazz Festival), Charmin Michelle sings with “taste and understatement, swing and savoir faire, grace and grooves, intimacy and panache” (TC Music Net). Born in Birmingham and raised in Minnesota, Michelle has wide ranging experiences, from the funk Jesse Johnson Revue to entertaining U.S. troops abroad to touring Europe with internationally known pianists Mulgrew Miller and Kirk Lightsey. On any given night she most likely can be found on stage at the Dakota, Artists Quarter, Café Luxx, Rossi’s Blue Star—anywhere that promotes top-flight jazz. Critic Tom Surowicz notes, “Her understated art is more about gentle persuasion, precise storytelling and easy swing.” In other words, a perfect fit for the repertoire of the JazzMN Big Band. Tonight she will be premiering arrangements written for her by another local icon, pianist and band leader Adi Yeshaya. (See www.charmsongs.com)

Joining in with Michelle will be Minneapolis South High graduate Jose James, who has been stirring up serious jazz dust in the Twin Cities recently. James turned a lot of heads as a finalist in the 2004 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition (Vocalists).

And hold on for a special appearance by saxophonist Percy Hughes. Cutting his teeth in an Army Ground Forces Band during World War II, young Hughes played with some of Duke Ellington's and Count Basie's bands. Returning to the Twin Cities, he headed his own bands, playing at the old Treasure Inn, which hosted such guest stars as Oscar Pettiford and Lester Young in the 40s. In recent years, Hughes has directed the Ellington Echoes, a group committed to honoring the music of Duke Ellington.

Each a star in his or her own right, the members of  the Jazz MN Big Band have diverse credentials and impeccable musicianship, ample evidence that great jazz is indeed “Made in Minnesota”:
