From October 23rd through the 20 the Jazz Party At Sea cruises the Caribean. Consider it a floating village crammed with great jazz clubs presenting a great jazz festival!

Joe Segal - Chicago's premier jazz club owner and his son Wayne are thrilled to be helping again this year after the astounding success of the previous three Annual Jazz Parties at Sea. !!!

23rd October 2004

The Heath Brothers—Jimmy, Percy, Tootie Heath and Jeb Patton
These three legendary brothers, Jimmy (saxophone) Percy (bass) and Albert 'Tootie' (drums) make up three fourths of this wonderful quartet. Jeb Patton's exciting piano rounds out the group. We loved them on the S/S Norway, the QE 2 and now we are proud to welcome them back to the M/S Sun. Brilliant musicians and also some of the nicest characters you'll meet around the ship
Jack DeJohnette Trio featuring Danilo Perez and Jerome Harris
HARRIS Jack DeJohnette is one of the most consistently inventive jazz percussionists extant. He possesses a comprehensive musicality rare among jazz drummers. He has played with John Coltrane and Miles Davis just to name a couple. Second in his trio is Danilo Perez a brilliant pianist who combines the bebop tradition with his Panamanian heritage, African elements and a willingness to take chances. Danilo has had a long time association with Paquito D'Rivera and Dizzy Gillespie. The third member of the trio is Harvard graduate, the brilliant electric guitarist and bassist Jerome Harris best known for his work with Sonny Rollins. What a trio, take your seats early for these giants of jazz.
Benny Green and Russell Malone
If you haven't been to one of our jazz parties before, you will be astounded at this fantastic duo. Benny on piano and Russell on guitar. Benny was nominated by Oscar Peterson to receive the Protégé Prize. Russell is a young man at one with his guitar. He has played with Harry Connick, Diana Krall and Branford Marsalis. The combination of these two young greats blew every body away at our 2nd Annual Jazz Party At Sea. We know they will do the same this year. Welcome back guys.
Larry Coryell Trio featuring Buster Williams and Paul Wertico
One of the pioneers of jazz-rock, Larry deserves a special place in the history of jazz. He brought sensibility to jazz playing the electric guitar since the 60's. He is armed with a brilliant technique and is comfortable in almost any style. He has recorded with Stephan Grappelli, Charlie Mingus, Sonny Rollins and Kenny Barron to name but a few. Along with Paul Wertico on drums who has been influenced by Roy Haynes to Ginger Baker and the unmistakable Buster Williams who was one of last year's AJPAS biggest hits on bass. This trio will have you rushing for your seats at each concert.
Hank Crawford
with an unmistakable blues wail, full of emotion and poignancy, altoist Hank Crawford bridges the gap between that tradition and that of jazz more completely than any other living horn player. Ray Charles hired hank when he was at college in Nashville; he was originally a baritone saxophonist, switching to alto in 1959. He then went on to become the musical director. He remains a premier arranger, soloist, composer leader and sideman, still recording the best music of his long career. We are indeed privileged.
David “Fathead” Newman
Has played alongside Buster Smith, Ornette Coleman, T-Bone Walker (to name but a few) before he became Ray Charles main tenor saxophone soloist. Other old sparring partners were Hank Crawford and Stanley Turrentine. Hopefully he and his old pals Junior Mance and Hank Crawford will treat us to some of the best jam sessions on the ship.
Cyrus Chestnut Trio with Neil Smith and Michael Hawkins
Cyrus first studied piano with his father at the age of five, official lessons began two years later. He ultimately graduated from Berklee with a degree in jazz composition and arranging. He has worked with Jon Hendricks, Betty Carter, Terence Blanchard to name but a few. This gifted young man now records his own CD's with his trio. He enjoys mixing styles and resists being typecast in any one niche. Listen out for some great Gospel amongst other musical magic from this fabulous trio.
Benny Golson All-stars — Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller and Terell Stafford
Benny Golson, a talented composer/arranger who's tenor playing continues to evolve with time. Although Benny played with Lionel Hampton and many other bands, he came to prominence while with Dizzy Gillespie's globe trotting big band. Now his tone has hardened and sounds much closer to Archie Shepp. He has formed the Jazztet with Curtis Fuller the unsurpassable trombonist who once again came into prominence in the 50's and outstanding trumpeter Terrell Stafford. The names of the greats that these wonderful musicians have played with just goes on and on and now we are over the moon that they are going to play for us. Once again take your seats early!
Junior Mance
Who rose through the ranks of Cannonball Adderley and Dizzy Gillespie. No stranger to jazz festivals - what jazz cruise would be complete without Junior? We have loved him aboard the S/S Norway, the QE 2 and our previous Annual Jazz Parties at Sea on the Norwegian Majesty and the Sun. We can't wait to welcome everybody's favourite pianist back. We know we said it last year Junior but no party would be the same without you!
