If you are working with an art form or if you are working with the music, you have to respect where it came from. Where it was at that moment and where you think it could go. - Sathima Bea Benjamin

David Fathead Newman: Heating Up the Hot Summer Jazz Festival! Print E-mail
Written by Andrea Canter, Contributing Editor
Saturday, 19 June 2004
For the liner notes to Newman’s latest recording, critic John Murph wrote, “At the ripe age of 70, Newman still hones a brawny, robust tone that's splendidly enlivened by his nimble, dance-like phrasing. When he plays, he never loses sight of the melody even during a song's most prickly sequences, making every phrase utterly singable. Like his blustery, wide-open sound, his improvisational emphasis on the melody is a testament to his Southern blues roots, proudly extending the legacy of the Texas Tenors, which include such illustrious stylists as Hershel Evens, Buddy Tate, Arnett Cobb, Illinois Jacquet, and Buster Smith.”

Today Newman plays mostly concert halls and festivals, rarely in clubs “unless I can get a non-smoking venue. I had surgery [10 years ago to remove his Adam's apple], so I can't be around smoke.”

On June 26-27, Newman will be blowing and breathing fresh air at the Hot Summer Jazz Festival in downtown Minneapolis, Saturday from 5:45-7:00 pm on stage at Peavy Plaza, and again on Sunday from 3:30-4:30 pm on the McPhail Clinic and Jam Stage at 13th and Nicollet. Both events are free! Later this summer, Newman will appear at the Cellar in Vancouver BC (July 3-4), at the Triple Door in Seattle (July 5-6), at Spivey Hall in Atlanta (July 22), at the Twins Jazz Club in Washington, DC (July 30-31), at the Catskill (NY) Jazz Festival (August 21). His fall tour takes him to the Blue Note in New York (September 28-30), Jazz at Sea (October), ending the year in Chicago at the Jazz Showcase (December 28-January 2).
