“It’s like a language. You learn the alphabet, which are the scales. You learn sentences, which are the chords. And then you talk extemporaneously with the horn. It’s a wonderful thing to speak extemporaneously, which is something I’ve never gotten the hang of. But musically I love to talk just off the top of my head. And that’s what jazz music is all about.” - Stan Getz

Ortlieb's JazzHaus

847 N. Third St Philadelphia, PA 19123

(215) 922-1035

www.ortliebsjazzhaus.com

Housed in an erstwhile brewery, Ortlieb's attracts committed jazz fans and musicians. With a "haus" band (led by Mickey Roker) and organ trio in residence, jam sessions are scheduled twice weekly. It's a keystone in the local jazz scene.

Ortlieb's is a musician's bar, and chances are, that there will be more players in the crowd than on the bandstand. A fair amount of sitting in takes place, and this is the spot where names will show up to jam after hours when a festival is in town. No cover, and cheap beer ensure plenty of students and impecunious but appreciative jazz fans packing the joint every weekend. You have to eat to get a table. The American-Cajun food is filling and down-home. Overall, in the downtown area, there is no better place to hear Jazz.
