Page 1 of 2 On March 26th, the Dakota hosted the local debut of 24-year-old Jamie Cullum, complete with a full mezzanine of Verve honchos overseeing their new investment (Cullum’s new Verve recording will be released on May 11th). And maybe Cullum IS the next big thing, although defining the “thing” is no easy matter. The extended set (over 90 minutes) was as much a three-ring circus as a showcase of Cullum’s very substantial chops as vocalist and pianist. The set began and ended with an a cappella intro quickly morphing into an acrobatic assault on the piano bench and then atop the piano itself…. and in between, Cullum moved quickly from ballad to bombast to blues to soft rock, demonstrating zigzagging runs up and down the keyboard, and using the piano (quite effectively) as a conga, harp, and punching bag. I was not particularly impressed with the rock-laced percussion of Sebastiaan de Krom but Cullum himself joined in and proved himself to be an able drummer.
