Curlew is represented by an amazing archival CD, "North America," that co-stars British guitarist Frith and cellist Tom Cora. The current lineup, including Davey Williams, is heard on two new releases. "Meet the Curlews!" is a tuneful, accessible, tightly scripted, sometimes rockin' studio CD with plenty of variety and punch. Then there's the way-out "Gussie," a forthcoming LP-only release recorded at Gus Lucky's bar for Twin Cities-based Roaratorio Records.
Cartwright also can be heard on Minnesota pianist Carei Thomas' long-awaited CD, "Mining Our Bid'ness" (on Roaratorio), and a soon-to-be-released live CD with his Twin Cities trio, Gloryland Ponycat (featuring bassist Adam Linz and drummer Alden Ikeda), on St. Paul's Innova Recordings. And he appears regularly at the Dinkytowner with the band Science vs. Flames, featuring Michael Lewis of Happy Apple and drummer J.T. Bates.
