"...he brings certain qualities to the table that you won't hear from any of his contemporaries…” --Tony Hall, Jazzwise “…polished, sophisticated, intricately organized music.”—Thomas Conrad, Jazz Times
Bob Sheppard One of the top reed players on the West Coast, Bob Sheppard makes a rare Minnesota appearance with a weekend at the Artists Quarter, September 21-22. Based in Los Angeles, the Eastman School of Music graduate has appeared on countless movie and television soundtracks and has enjoyed associations with Chick Corea’s Origin, Freddie Hubbard, Randy Brecker, Horace Silver, Elvis Costello, Kurt Elling and Dianne Reeves. He’s appeared with Stevie Wonder and Steely Dan, recently toured with Herbie Hancock, and has long-standing collaborations with Billy Childs and Peter Erskine. Sheppard recorded with the legendary Joni Mitchell on her current four-disc set and her 2007 Grammy-winning Shine. He also played on a live studio video with Mitchell and Hancock, and performs in the band for American Idol. Bob’s most recent recording, Close Your Eyes (BMF Jazz), features Alan Pasqua and John Beasley sharing piano duties, and acclaimed drummer Antonio Sanchez.
Sheppard’s arsenal includes tenor, alto and soprano sax, flute, piccolo, clarinet and bass clarinet. Noted Jack Massarik of the London Evening Standard, “Sheppard is a sort of jazz Clark Kent, whose mild manner and bespectacled, studious appearance conceals a super-versatile talent." An avid educator on the faculty of the Thornton School of Music at USC, Bob Sheppard is in town as guest clinician for Saxophone Day, sponsored by the MacPhail Center for Music and McNally Smith College of Music September 22nd. For more information, see the Artists Quarter website at www.artistsquarter.com. The AQ is located at 408 St Peter Street in the lower level of the Hamm Building in downtown St. Paul. Sets begin at 9 pm, cover for Bob Sheppard, $15. |
