Chris Foreman Two Hammond B3 organists will be performing in a cutting sesison when pianist/organist Dan Trudell joins with Chicago's beloved Deep Blue Organ Trio featuring internationally acclaimed jazz guitarist Bobby Broom, B-3 organist Chris Foreman, and drummer Greg Rockingham at the Green Mill on Friday, August 10th from 9:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. and on Saturday, August 11th from 8:00 p.m. until midnight. The Deep Blue Organ Trio's latest CD Wonderful!, a tribute to Stevie Wonder. Their deeply informed, strongly felt versions of nine Wonder songs from the 1970s. However, for this weekend, I would expect more classic organ pieces from the book of Jack McDuff, Groove Holmes, Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff. It will be a groove-fest not to be missed.
Chris Foreman Chris Foreman is a masterful musician and heir to the throne occupied by the soulful, bluesy jazz organ legends who were once his influence. Blind at birth, Foreman started playing piano at age five and began formal training at seven. As a teenager he was attracted to the organ sounds of Jack McDuff, Groove Holmes, Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff. This attraction led Chris to pursue playing jazz on the organ, which he undertook through intensive study of recordings. Unlike many African-American musicians whose musical knowledge begins and is established through the church, Chris didn’t start his apprenticeship as a church organist until he was almost twenty years old – well after his jazz roots were established. He has arrived at a most exciting blend of blues-gospel and jazz and has developed a stunning command and range on the instrument. The blend of his sound is evident in his professional experience, which has included work with Hank Crawford, Albert Collins, Bernard Purdie and The Mighty Blue Kings. Dan Trudell Dan Trudell has performed in a wide range of venues ranging from his funk / jam group the B3 Bombers featuring the original "funky drummer" from James Brown fame, Clyde Stubblefield, to having been featured as a Hammond Organ soloist with big band. His organ / piano trios are in constant demand. His organ style is greatly influenced by the greats who came before him such as Lonnie Smith, Jimmy Smith, Don Patterson, and Brother Jack McDuff. Dan resides and performs in the Chicago area and has toured and performed throughout the world. Dan Trudell has been voted "a rising star" by Downbeat Magazine and has recently toured with Matt Wilson's "Arts and Crafts" quartet featuring Terrell Stafford and Dennis Irwin in Italy. Dan's group the B3 Bombers was featured on the main stage of the 2007 Chicago Jazz Festival. Dan holds the piano chair in the Chicago Jazz Orchestra and has performed as a sideman with Aretha Franklin, Kenny Burrell, Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Buddy DeFranco, Roy Hargrove, Jeff Hamilton, Kurt Elling, Anne Hampton Calloway, Joe Williams, Jimmy Heath, Doug Lawrence, Jerry Weldon, Jim Rotondi, and Eric Alexander among others. Bobby Broom © Don Berryman Bobby Broom playing guitar and studying music at age twelve. Bobby attended New York ‘s famous High School of Music and Art and by the time he was sixteen was playing with Sonny Rollins, and Charlie Parker pianists, Al Haig and Walter Bishop, Jr. Broom holds a Masters Degree in Jazz Pedagogy from Northwestern University. Bobby Broom has played alongside some of jazz’ most dominant figures including Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Stanley Turrentine, Kenny Burrell, Charles Earland, Kenny Garrett and Marcus Miller. He has also released several recordings as a leader Drummer Greg Rockingham began playing when he was just three years old and debuted as a professional musician at age five in his father’s jazz ensemble. An alumnus of the famed Interlochen Arts Academy and Northeastern University, Greg has performed or recorded with a wide range of famous names, including the orchestras of Glenn Miller and Guy Lombardo, vocalists Freddie Cole, Patty Page and Jerry Vale and instrumentalists Nat Adderley, Kenny Burrell, Charles Earland and Ellis Marsalis.
