After his successful tributes to Stevie Wonder, first-call bassist Jay Young returns to the Artists Quarter this weekend (July 27-28) with a new spin on the music of Herbie Hancock and Earth, Wind and Fire. Colleagues including iron-fisted drummed Kevin Washington and voices from McNally Smith fuse jazz and R&B in a high-energy show that will keep you on the edge of your ears.

Jay Young is one of the Twin Cities’ ‘first call’ bassists. He is a freelance performer and educator involved in a vast array of projects, working with national and international artists. He has performed at the Guthrie Theater, Ordway Center, Illusion, and Penumbra Theatre. Jay has also been a featured performer at the Lincoln Center, Juilliard School, Boston Symphony Hall, The Blue Note, Umbra (Italy), Espoo (Finland), and Tejo (Portugal). He has shared the stage with Ray Brown, James Moody, Dizzy Gillespie, T.S. Monk, Grover Washington Jr., Dave Brubeck, Ron Carter, Buster Williams, Bobby Lyle, Eddie Daniels, the Minnesota Orchestra, Omaha Symphony, Phil Upchurch, Jennifer Holiday, Harry Connick Jr., Jay Leno, Paul Bollenbeck, Reverend Al Green, Bobby McFerrin, Jefferson Starship, Carole King, and Ray Charles, Kevin Mahogany, Joe Lovano, Ernie Watts, Tim Ries, Sony Holland, Marvin “Smitty” Smith, and many others. A founding member of Moore by Four who is often on stage with such area stars as Debbie Duncan and Bruce Henry, Young also devotes significant time to teaching as a faculty bass instructor at McNally Smith College of Music.

Drummer Kevin Washington grew up in Detroit, the son of musicians Faye (flute, voice) and Donald (saxophones) Washington. Since relocating to the Twin Cities, Kevin has been burning up one trapset after another, playing with such local heroes as Doug Little, Nachito Herrera and Bruce Henry, as well as Jay Young. He’s also a busy educator, teaching through Walker West Music Academy and the Twin Cities Jazz Workshop.

Previous presentations of the Lyric Factory have included Jay’s McNally Smith colleagues, saxman Pete Whitman and vocalist Judi Donaghy, keyboard specialist Thom West, spoken word artist Sol Testimony, and special guests. With the music of Herbie Hancock and Earth, Wind and Fire for inspiration, it will be a sonic meltdown on the Artist Quarter stage this weekend.

The Artists Quarter is located at 408 St Peter Street, in the lower level of the Hamm Building in downtown St. Paul; cover $10; www.artistsquarter.com
