Victor Wooten Outside, the Dakota Jazz Club and Restaurant has one of the most vibrant patios in downtown Minneapolis. Inside, the club boasts what has become one of the most eclectic music scenes in the Midwest. The July heat might discourage dining al fresco, but come inside and enjoy the cool air and hot rhythms. Jazz fans this month will enjoy the likes of Bill Frisell, Victor Wooten, Ronnie Laws and James Carter, as well as 2 weekend nights with local dynamo Nachito Herrera. Other nights of music feature CJ Chenier, Terrance Simien, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Davina and the Vagabonds, Luisa Maita, Adrian Legg and a special 100th birthday salute to Woody Guthrie.
Jazz Nights Bill FrisellİAndrea Canter July 1-2, Bill Frisell, “All We Area Saying” --Tribute to John Lennon (7 pm, $45/40 ticket). Master of many projects and one of the living legends of jazz guitar, Bill Frisell returns to the Dakota with his latest project, his take on the music of John Lennon. He’s joined on this tour by pedal steel specialist Greg Liez, bassist Tony Scherr and drummer Kenny Wollesen. If you think you know the Lennon canon, think again.July 8, Irv Williams Quartet (7 pm, no cover, Foodie night). Wasn't Irv's retirement party just a couple months ago? Sure enough, even at the time, Irv promised a "comeback," but it seems he never left. The 92-year-old tenor sax legend is still blowing sweet and fine, with Peter Schimke on keys and most likely Billy Peterson on bass. July 9-10, Victor Wooten Band (7 & 9 pm, $40/30 ticket). Bassist with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Victor Wooten has amassed five Grammy awards as well as most other major awards on his instrument, including three Bassist of the Year honors from Bass Player Magazine --the only person to have won the award more than once. Beyond his solo and ensemble exploits, Wooten is a dedicated educator offering clinics, camps, and instructional DVDs, and recently published his first novel, The Music Lesson. Ronnie LawsİRoger Humbert July 13 & 21, Nachito Herrera (8 pm, $15 cover). Typically this Cuban import ignites the Dakota weekend crowds on a monthly basis, but he splits his two nights across two weekends in July. A pianist with monstrous facility who melds the sounds of Havana with American jazz (Ellington is a favorite) and pop influences (Earth, Wind and Fire), Nachito is beginning to spend more and more time away from his adopted home in Minnesota, including his late June tour of the West Coast that brought him to Yoshi’s in San Francisco as well as to venues in Santa Cruz and Phoenix. Enjoy him while he’s here! July 15, Viva Brasil (7 pm, no cover). One of the hottest new bands in the Twin Cities, Viva Brasil brings the pop, jazz and traditional sounds of Brasil to the Dakota. With a repertoire of tunes sung both English and Portuguese and putting a Brazilian spin on American fare, Viva Brasil is led by bassist Altamir Coelho, and features Kevin Washington on drums, Cory Won on guitar, Samuel de Moraes on sax and flute, Eliezer Freitas Santos on percussion, and Ruens de Mello on vocals. Foodie Night specials! Jana Nyberg GroupİAndrea Canter July 18, Jana Nyberg Group (7 pm, no cover). We should buy stock in the Jana Nyberg Group as it is one of the fastest rising ensembles in town. Led by vocalist/flautist Jana Nyberg, the band features some of the best young talents around—Adam Meckler on trumpet, Evan Montgomery on guitar, Matt Peterson on bass and Greg Schutte on drums. Her repertoire ranges from Peggy Lee to Cole Porter to Bonnie Raitt, and no matter how many times you have heard one of her tunes, Jana makes it all her own. And then there are the tunes that really are all her own—she’s a talented songwriter as well. Another Foodie Night. July 23-24, Ronnie Laws and Tom Browne Super Group (7 & 9 pm, $35/25 ticket). Brother of famed jazz flautist Hubert Laws, saxophonist Ronnie has been making his mark on the contemporary jazz and R&B scene. A commercial airline pilot as well as musician, trumpeter Tom Browne particularly worked in Sonny Fortune’s band before embarking on his own solo career, making some hit cross-over recordings. Now these two titans join forces for two nights of blazing and soulful music. James CarterİAndrea Canter July 29, James Carter Organ Trio (7 & 9 pm, $35/25 ticket). Since he first hit the scene in the early 90s, multi-reed virtuoso James Carter has been a crowd favorite. The Detroit native first impressed with his command of every saxophone and flute, and over the years has released an impressive discography. He formed his acclaimed Organ Trio with fellow Detroiters organist Gerard Gibbs and drummer Leonard King; King has been making his home here in the Twin Cities. Always a high energy performance.
