The PipJazz Sundays concert series at St. Paul’s Landmark Center launches its 2012 season on Sunday, March 11 (5 pm), with guest singer/multi-instrumentalist Jason Peterson DeLaire and student guest artist, 17-year-old saxophonist Devante Jackson. This series, headed by Chicago transplant Pippi Ardennia, features Pippi on vocals and the “house band” of pianist Peter Schimke, guitarist Jimi Behringer, bassist Billy Peterson and drummer Glenn Swanson.

What is “Pipjazz”? Coined by her fans in Chicago—she relocated to the Twin Cities about five years ago—“PipJazz” according to Pippi simply means “good music that makes you feel good.” Guest artists during the 2011 season included Rockie Robbins, Jamecia Bennett, Patty Peterson, Gary Schulte, Irv Williams and Esera Tuaolo. In November, with support from the Twin Cities Jazz Society, PipJazz Sundays expanded to include student guest artists as a part of each concert. The Twin Cities Jazz Society will continue as a cosponsor of the PipJazz Youth program, sharing the task of selecting student guest artists with Walker West Music Academy.

Pippi Ardennia has been singing publically since she was 13 years old, and has performed at many of Chicago's historic jazz venues, including the Burning Spear, High Chaparral, Capitol Theater, Mr. Kelly's, Rosebud on Rush, Redhead, Green Dolphin, Tavern Club and Symphony Center, as well as the Taste of Chicago. In Minneapolis, Pippi has performed at the Dakota Jazz Club, FACES, and the Twin Cities Jazz Festival. She’s sung for President Clinton, Chicago’s Mayor Daley, Tony Bennett and Liza Minnelli, and shared the stage with Freddie Hubbard, George Freeman, Billy Branch, Johnny Taylor and more. “I used to think of myself as a ‘song stylist,’ rather than a jazz singer,” says Pippi. “I was a storyteller more than a technical singer. But after forty years, I think of myself as a real singer. But it’s about the emotion, the feeling.” Pippi was recently featured on Town Square Television’s Girl Talk and WCCO’s Almanac, and is looking forward to the spring 2012 release of Love So Good which features her original compositions and lyrics as well as a wide assortment of covers.

Jason P. DeLaire is a third generation musician in Minnesota’s “first family” of music, the Petersons. Proficient on keyboards and saxophone, he is also a talented singer, songwriter and producer, working across genres of jazz and R&B. Currently touring with Oleta Adams, he has also toured nationally and internationally with renowned artists such as Donny Osmond, Michael Bolton, Prince, Alexander O’Neal, Richard Marx, Solo, and Cherrelle. His resume also includes performing locally with Patty Peterson and Friends, and studio work with Bobby Brown, Ben Sidran and Flyte Time Productions. Jason attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, studying film scoring and musical harmony. His debut CD, In My Life, received critical acclaim during the inauguration of President Barack Obama for his reflective lyrics.

Over the past few years he has performed at the Twin Cities Jazz Festival, Freedom Jazz Festival and Midtown Global Jazz Festival. After graduation this spring, Devante plans to continue his music studies at the University of Manitoba.
