Perhaps most well known as the vibraphonist for the Dave Holland Quintet and Big Band, Steve Nelson is also a star in his own right. A true magician, in his hands the mallets transform into feathery streaks of light. Nelson brings his sonic sleight-of-hand to the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles, June 13-16, featuring monster pianist Patrice Rushen.

Pittsburgh native Steve Nelson graduated from Rutgers University with Masters and Bachelors degrees in music. Influenced by Milt Jackson while evolving his own sound, he gigged with Grant Green in the 1970s, and since has performed and/or recorded with Kenny Barron, Bobby Watson, Mulgrew Miller, David Fathead Newman, Johnny Griffin, Jackie McLean and Buster Williams, and has been a member of Dave Holland’s Quintet and Big Band for over a decade. Of his role in Dave Holland’s ensembles, Martin Longley (Jazzreview) offered that “Steve Nelson plays an important role throughout, his tingly-spine sparks acting as a piano alternative, establishing a unique form of punctuation for the whole band…” His recordings as a leader include Live at Acireale (Red Records), Full Nelson and Fuller Nelson (Sunnyside), New Beginnings (TCB), and Communications (Criss Cross). Nelson is also a dedicated jazz educator who has taught at Princeton University.

At Steamers (L-R): Kevin Kanner, Ruan McGillicuddy, Annie Sellick and Eli Brueggemann (Photo: Glenn Mitchell)

(May 4, 2007). Annie Sellick is now a constant in the jazz world and continues to be a rising star in all her performances and musical endeavors. She has been in several successful previous performances at Steamers and continues to wow its audiences. She hails from Nashville, TN and probably the most noticeable ingredient of her persona is her ability to make people happy with her carefree, wistful style.

Her trio backing her this night: Pianist, Eli Brueggemann; bassist, Ryan McGillacuddy; and drummer, Kevin Kanner. These guys worked unbelievably well together, starting off the evening by playing ever-popular jazz standard, Herbie Hancock’s “Dolphin Dance.”

Sellick began her set with “It Might As Well Be Spring.” The audience was taken with her, especially with her natural stage present. She not only sings very well, but entertains them in her sultry style and keeps their attention throughout her show. A highlight of the set was her rendition of “I’ve Got the World on a String.” Her pianist for this evening, Brueggemann, provides some super sharp playing and arranging talents and along with her two strong sidemen, gave a “knock-out” backing. He also had a splendid arrangement for Sellick singing “Besame Mucho.” Bassist McGillicuddy’s solo shined beyond compare.

Greg Osby
St. Louis native Greg Osby studied clarinet, flute and alto saxophone, playing with blues and R &B groups through high school. He majored in music at Howard University in Washington, DC , studying jazz for the first time, but noting that the program was just getting underway. After two years, he transferred to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He left before graduation for a gig in New York with John Faddis, and played with Lester Bowie, Woody Shaw and David Murray before his big break as a member of Jack DeJohnette’s “Special Edition” in 1987. Says Osby, "My musical thinking for performance and composition advanced by light years as Jack was open to my input and was very encouraging in pushing me to to maintain a steady flow of experimentation. It marked a major turning point in my development as an artist." One of the outcomes of this development was Osby’s role in the founding of the famed M-Base Collective with Steve Coleman in the late 80s. His first recording contract with German label JMT led to four releases before signing with Blue Note in 1990. During the following decade plus, Osby was particularly prolific, recording 15 CDs. His most recent release, Channel Three, features a trio with Matt Brewer on bass and Jeff “Tain” Watts on drums. In 2007, Osby has also toured with the World Saxophone Quartet and in varying formats with organist Trudy Pitts.
