"I found that within my playing that I could play notes, not at first, because at first I couldn't hear these notes, so I wouldn't play them. But as I play more and more I hear more notes to play against the more common chord progressions. And a lot of people say they're wrong. Well, I can't say they're right, and I can't say they're wrong. To my hearing, they're exactly correct". - Eric Dolphy

The Bass duo of Kristin Korb with Todd Johnson will appear at Galli's on Sunday, April 22nd at 7:00 PM. The double bass (also known as the contrabass, string bass, bass fiddle or just bass) is rarely featured in a duo setting, it is even rare for a jazz band of any size have more than one. So this combination is a rare treat, paring the swinging upright bass and vocals of Kristin Korb with Todd Johnson on the six string electric bass which, in the hands of a master like Johnson, provides a extended range and the ability to play chord changes and bass lines simultaneously.

There are few bass players who sing as they perform but Kristin Korb in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan and plays the bass with the authority and swing of the great Ray Brown. With these and many other strong influences, Kristin Korb has created a style and presence all her own.

Gonzalo Rubalcaba
One of the most significant pianist today, Cuban born Gonzalo Rubalcaba will appear with his quintet at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood on Wednesday, April 11th through Sunday, April 15th. Gonzalo Rubalcaba is a prolific virtuoso and composer who brilliantly fuses Cuban with American jazz influences. The Gonzalo Rubalcaba Quintet features Mr. Rubalcaba on piano with Matt Brewer on bass, Marcus Gilmore on drums, Mike Rodriguez on trumpet and Yosvany Terry on sax.

Gonzalo Rubalcaba was born in Havana, Cuba, May 27, 1963, into a musical family rich in the traditions of the country’s artistic past. During his childhood, in addition to the standard fare of elementary schools, Gonzalo was absorbing his Cuban musical heritage through personal contacts within his family, notably his father, pianist Guillermo Rubalcaba, and leading musicians who were frequent house guests: Frank Emilio, Peruchin, Felipe Dulzaides and others. He also assimilated through scarce and treasured recordings the tunes and styles of 40’s – 70’s US jazz masters: Thelonius Monk, Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson among pianists; and instrumentalists Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey.
