Kristin Kord © Andrea Canter The Bass duo of Kristin Korb with Todd Johnson will appear at Galli's on Sunday, April 22nd at 7:00 PM. The double bass (also known as the contrabass, string bass, bass fiddle or just bass) is rarely featured in a duo setting, it is even rare for a jazz band of any size have more than one. So this combination is a rare treat, paring the swinging upright bass and vocals of Kristin Korb with Todd Johnson on the six string electric bass which, in the hands of a master like Johnson, provides a extended range and the ability to play chord changes and bass lines simultaneously.
There are few bass players who sing as they perform but Kristin Korb in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan and plays the bass with the authority and swing of the great Ray Brown. With these and many other strong influences, Kristin Korb has created a style and presence all her own. |

Gonzalo Rubalcaba One of the most significant pianist today, Cuban born Gonzalo Rubalcaba will appear with his quintet at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood on Wednesday, April 11th through Sunday, April 15th. Gonzalo Rubalcaba is a prolific virtuoso and composer who brilliantly fuses Cuban with American jazz influences. The Gonzalo Rubalcaba Quintet features Mr. Rubalcaba on piano with Matt Brewer on bass, Marcus Gilmore on drums, Mike Rodriguez on trumpet and Yosvany Terry on sax. Gonzalo Rubalcaba was born in Havana, Cuba, May 27, 1963, into a musical family rich in the traditions of the country’s artistic past. During his childhood, in addition to the standard fare of elementary schools, Gonzalo was absorbing his Cuban musical heritage through personal contacts within his family, notably his father, pianist Guillermo Rubalcaba, and leading musicians who were frequent house guests: Frank Emilio, Peruchin, Felipe Dulzaides and others. He also assimilated through scarce and treasured recordings the tunes and styles of 40’s – 70’s US jazz masters: Thelonius Monk, Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson among pianists; and instrumentalists Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey. |

Joey DeFracesco Trio © Howard A. Gitelson Joey DeFrancesco is the undisputed king of the Hammond B3. If you dig Joey, you're not alone and you're in pretty good company. He wowed Jack McDuff as a child and Miles Davis dug him and took him on the road when he was only 17 years old. Anytime you have the opportunity to hear a virtuoso like this, you should take it. Joey has the ears and the chops to make wonderful music and he does it. He is traveling with the hottest jazz organ trio around, featuring the solid Philadelphia drummer, Byron "Wookie" Landham and Toronto guitar sensation (currently living in Brooklyn, NY), Juno-nominated Jake Langley. Catch Joey's trio at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles April 4th-7th. On his latest release on Concord, Joey DeFrancesco Live: The Authorized Bootleg, Joey features tenor titan George Colman on a burning live outing with his trio at Yoshi's. “There’s a physical electricity to Hargrove’s performance that is not terribly common in jazz.” –David Adler Roy Hargrove © Ian Gittler After Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove is probably the best known trumpeter on the planet today. And at only 36, his output as a recording artist (13 sessions as leader) is almost as remarkable as his chops. His most recent project, RH Factor, created a lot of buzz by merging R&B and hip-hop mainstream with jazz, but his past and current efforts are decidedly more Dizzy than Ice-T. As noted by Christopher Jones following a Hargrove Quintet performance at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley in Seattle, this is “straightforward, no-nonsense modern jazz…with integrity and conviction.” Hargrove brings that conviction –along with his quintet—to Catalina’s, 6725 West Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, April 4th - 8th. |
