Mitchell Longtime bassist John Heard was given a magnificent birthday party, Friday, July 3rd at Charlie O’s. He has remained the house bassist at Charlie O’s for several years and always provides strong bass playing in their many diversified jazz shows. Heard took up the bass at age 14. Some of many early career credits include Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Sonny Rollins, Benny Carter, Hampton Hawes, Cal Tjader and Dexter Gordon. He has recorded over 150 albums and appeared in most major jazz festivals, Carnegie Hall, Hollywood Bowl, the Vienna Opera House and Royal Festival Hall in London. For years, Heard has also created drawings, paintings and sculptures, often portraying fellow musicians. Many of his art works are part of the décor at Charlie O’s. |

"Walden writes with old-school technique but far-reaching vistas." - DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE  Chris Walden The Chris Walden Big Band will celebrate its 10th Anniversary with a special concert featuring Tierney Sutton, Carol Welsman, Courtney Fortune, and Christopher Cross at Catalina Bar & Grill in Hollywood CA on Sunday, August 9th at 7:30 pm. Since early 1999 Chris Walden is calling a big band his own. L.A.'s finest studio musicians are coming together to play exclusively Chris' arrangements of known bebop and fusion tunes as well as Chris' original compositions. The current program features well known film music themes newly arranged in a new contemporary jazz style as well as original compositions by Chris Walden. The first US release of the Chris Walden Big Band was nominated for two Grammy® awards in 2005. In the studio and on stage the Chris Walden Big Band appeared with Paul Anka, Michael Bolton, Bobby Shew, Carol Welsman and frequently with Tierney Sutton. |

 John Pizzarelli © Andrea Canter On Thursday, July 29th through Sunday, August 2nd, multi-talented guitarist and singer John Pizzarelli will be sharing the Catalina Bar and Grill stage in Hollywood with his wife, theatrically gifted vocalist and Arbors Records recording artist, Jessica Molaskey. In the words of Stephen Holden of the New York Times, “The Pizzarelli-Molaskey duo are as good as it gets in any entertainment medium.” In reference to their extended engagement at New York’s Cafe Carlyle last year, Holden says, “John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey, the wittiest, most musically savvy husband-and-wife team in pop-jazz, transformed Café Carlyle into a silk-covered magic carpet that floated up and away to screwball heaven.” |

 Jeff Hamilton Renowned drummer Jeff Hamilton and his trio return to Steamers Jazz club on Friday, July 24th and Saturday, July 25th. In addition to his many recordings with Ray Brown, Jeff has been on nearly 200 recordings with artists such as Natalie Cole, Diana Krall, Milt Jackson, Rosemary Clooney, Barbara Streisand, Mel Torme, John Pizzarelli, Benny Carter, Lalo Schifrin, George Shearing, Dr. John, Clark Terry, Gene Harris, Toshiko Akioshi, Scott Hamilton, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Keely Smith, Bill Holman, Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel and Mark Murphy. Jeff is a frequent guest of the WDR Big Band in Cologne, Germany. He also appeared in Natalie Cole's Great Performances PBS special, Unforgettable and an Oscar Peterson documentary, Life In The Key Of Oscar.
