Carla Bley is keeping Steve Swallow, Andy Sheppard and Billy
Drummond busy in September on a whirl-wind tour that stops at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles
from 09/06/2005 trhough 9/10/2005,
then moves on to
Yoshi's, the Monterey Jazz Festival, and Jazz Alley.
Carla Bley, (born May 11, 1938 in Oakland, California) is an
American jazz composer, pianist and band leader. An important figure in
post bebop jazz, she is perhaps best known for her jazz opera The
Escalator Over the Hill (released as a triple LP set). Bley's latest,
"THE LOST CHORDS", was written expressly for the talents of Carla Bley,
Steve Swallow, Andy Sheppard and Billy Drummond.
Carla Bley's father, a piano teacher and church choirmaster, encouraged
her to sing and to learn to play the piano. After giving up the church
to immerse herself in roller skating at the age of fourteen, she moved
to New York at seventeen and became a cigarette girl at Birdland, where
she met the jazz pianist Paul Bley, whom she married in 1957. He
encouraged her to start composing. The two later divorced, though he
continued to play her compositions, as did Jimmy Giuffre, George
Russell and Art Farmer. |

"Kenny Burrell is overall the greatest guitarist in
the world and he's my favorite." - B.B. King
"Burrell is the grand master of jazz guitar." -
Dizzy Gillespie
The Kenny Burrell Quintet featuring Roberto Miranda(bass), Herman
Riley(sax/flute), Sherman Ferguson(drums) and Tom Ranier(piano) will
appear at the Catalina Bar
& Grill in Hollywood for four nights starting on Thursday,
August 11th and running through Sunday, August 14th.
After
40 years as a jazz professional, appearing on several hundred albums as
leader and sideman, Kenny Burrell is among the handful of guitar greats
who have forever changed the role of their instrument. Staunch musical
integrity and discriminate taste
coupled with matchless technique have made the guitarist nonpareil
among his peers. "My goal is to play with good tone, good phrasing and
to swing," says Burrell, "I strive for honesty in playing what I feel." |
