"I want to be involved with music that is truly honest - that's not trying to follow trends or fit into someone's idea about what jazz 'is'. For Bird, Miles, Monk, Coltrane, and Wayne Shorter, I hold the highest level of appreciation because their love and knowledge of tradition was never greater than their need to follow their own path. The need to be themselves. This is my goal - my aspiration - to acknowledge with love my influences while attempting a move forward - to be open and receptive to shifts in the musical terrain - to make music that is relevant to my present day experience" - Ravi Coltrane |

Kenny Garrett © Andrea Canter Over the course of a stellar career that has spanned more than 30 years, saxophonist Kenny Garrett has become the preeminent alto saxophonist of his generation. From his first gig with the Duke Ellington Orchestra (led by Mercer Ellington) through his time spent with musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis, Garrett has always brought a vigorous yet melodic, and truly distinctive, alto saxophone sound to each musical situation. As a bandleader for the last two decades, he has also continually grown as a composer. With his latest recording, Seeds From The Underground, Garrett has given notice that these qualities have not only become more impressive, but have provided him with the platform to expand his horizons and communicate his musical vision clearly. Seeds From The Underground is a powerful return to the straight-ahead, acoustic and propulsive quartet format that showcases Garrett’s extraordinary abilities. Catch Kenny Garrett at Catalina's in Hollywood on Thursday, May 10th through Sunday, May 13th. |

Latin Jazz artist Jose Rizo will bring his new nine–piece Latin jazz ensemble, Mongorama to the Bevelry Hills for a free community concert celebrating the musical legacy of conga legend Mongo Santamaria on Sunday, May 6th. Presented by the Playboy Jazz Festival as part of their free community event series, the concert will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Beverly Hills Civic Center Plaza, located at 450 North Rexford Drive, between Santa Monica Boulevard and Burton Way. The concert is the first of Playboy’s free community events held in conjunction with the upcoming Playboy Jazz Festival June 16th and 17th at the Hollywood Bowl. Mongorama Mongorama will celebrate the musical legacy of conga legend Mongo Santamaria. by playing much of his early charanga-jazz material from the 1950’s and 60’s, featuring many of the original compositions he was famous for, including “Bacoso”, “QueMaravilloso”, “Las Guajiras” and more. The group’s new, self-titled Mongorama CD received a Grammy nomination earlier this year. Driven by infectiously danceable rhythms and modern interpretations of charanga and straight-ahead jazz, the group’s sound results in swinging salsa music that is hard to resist. The concert will also feature an opening artist soon to be announced. |

Rose Mallett Discovering jazz vocalist Rose Mallet is pure pleasure. She has been captivating audiences with her special brand of vocal delivery for a number of years, her excellent vocal range reminiscent of Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Merle Kreibich, who books the jazz gigs at Crowne Plaza LAX Jazz Club, introduced the evening’s performers: Gaea Schell (piano), Blake White, bass, Paul Kreibich (drums), and special guest, Rob Kyle (saxes and flute). Schell led the quartet in a beautiful opening number, John Green’s “Out of Nowhere.” This version blended well among the quartet members and produced some nice solos as well. |
