"In my world, the first thing I reach for is the sound. Technique is Ok, but if you got the technique and I got a good sound, I'll beat you every time. You can play a thousand notes and I can play one note and wipe you out. What I reach for is ... a sound." -Dewey Redman

The Artists' Quarter is a musician owned and operated jazz club that has been a Twin Cities institution since it first opened in Minneapolis in the '70's. It has great sight lines, a great sound system, and a loyal following. The owner and frequent drummer on stage is Kenny Horst who is one of the swingingest, sweetest guys you could meet. Davis Wilson works the door and does the stage introductions for all the national acts. He does a great Lord Buckley impression telling the crowd that: "the AQ is pleased and flipped to have you here tonight." If Kenny Horst is the heartbeat of the Artists Quarter, Davis Wilson is it's soul. Be sure to greet him at the door and he will give you the low-down Click here for a video of Davis introducing an act.

Jazz MN—Slide Hampton and Big Band “Festival” Closes Season Print E-mail
Written by Andrea Canter, Contributing Editor
    Sunday, 18 April 2004
The best music bargain of the spring had to be the season finale of Jazz MN Big Band, held at Benson Great Hall on the Bethel College campus last Saturday night. An enthusiastic crowd was treated not only to special guest trombonist Slide Hampton, but to nearly 2 ˝ hours of multiple configurations of the best in local jazz talent. Starting off with the Minnesota Trombone All-Stars (5 trombones and a rhythm section), this group then backed the ever-effective Connie Evingson for three vocals before joining forces with Slide Hampton. After intermission, the full JazzMn Big Band provided a preview of next season’s guest artists with compositions by Rob McConnell, Carl Saunders, and Denis DiBlasio; showcased the winners of JazzMn’s High School Improvisation Contest ( John Raymond on trumpet and Scott Burden on trombone), and closed out the evening with another set featuring Hampton. For the price of one concert, one had a ticket to a single-stage mini-festival of high flying brass.

Pete Whitman at the AQPete Whitman is a very talented performer, composer, arranger and band leader. He plays tenor, alto and soprano saxophones and flute. His current project is the Pete Whitman X-tet which performs monthly at the Artists' Quarter in Saint Paul. Downbeat magazine gave their recent Artegra record's release "Where's When?" a well deserved four stars. This CD is a SACD multi-track recording and sounds amazing. The Pete WHitman Quintet also has a CD out and Pete's previous quintet called Departure Point also has a great self-titled CD available.

Pete also performs regularly with the JazzMN big band, JAZZAX sazophone quintet, and his own quintet.

Pete Whitman has been actively composing, arranging, and performing for the past 21 years. As a jazz saxophonist he has performed with such artists as Randy Brecker, Jack McDuff, and the Woody Herman Orchestra, and currently leads his own group, The Pete Whitman X-Tet. Whitman attended North Texas State University, where he received his B.M. and M.M. Majoring in Jazz Studies and Minoring in Flute. Currently, Whitman is also teaching at Music Tech, a Minneapolis-based music school where he heads the Woodwind and Brass Department.

Tom Lewis is an excellent jazz bass player who plays in some of the best emsembles around town. A long standing member of the "Jazz All Stars" (local bebop icon Eddie Berger's last band) as well as the well respected Phil Hey Quartet.

Tom can play it all. He is a free-bop, straight-ahead, hard bop and bebop bassist and he swings like anything. He is a frequent sideman at gigs around town and on some of the best local artists' CD's.

IrvHe is a local treasure and pleasure to hear. Tenor saxophone man Irv Willians is called "Mr. Smooth", not that he plays in the contemporary 'smooth jazz' genre, but he has a smooth full tone and tends to focus on beautiful ballads. This cat, now in his 80's, still has great chops and can play with a style that reveals depth of jazz knowledge and experience. He is also very popular and was voted "Best Jazz Musician" in the 2001 City Pages readers poll.

Irv has had several retirement parties, but still can be heard gigging around town. The Zander Cafe and Sophias occasionally feature him and he is well worth seeking out. He is also a very nice guy with quite a sense of humor.

Irv settled here after WWII, and following stints with Fletcher Henderson and Mary Lou Williams. He is the beloved elder statesman, the guy who remembers the Flame, the Key Club, Cassius's Bamboo Room, and countless other bygone joints that once dotted a lost, cool Twin Cities nightscape.

ImageAnthony Cox is a Twin Cities Bass player who shines in a town full of great bass players. He is a solid, disciplined player who is at home in traditional, post-bop and more rock oriented avant-guard settings that are increasingly popular with a growing young audience in town. He performs and is at home with upright bass, string electric bass guitar and Spanish style acoustic bass guitar (one of my personal favorites because of its unique sound).

He has recorded with Dewey Redman Geri Allen, Arthur Blythe, Mike Cain, Uri Caine and many others. He is pictured at right at the old Dakota Bar and Grill in a photograph courtesy of Howard Gitelson.
