"What I get curious about is when critics in the media, as well as musicians, tend to look down upon those who retain jazz's fundamentals, while they celebrate loudly those who consciously choose not to swing and not to even acknolwledge the blues." - Doug Wamble

Jason Steele Ensemble: Some Wonderful Moment
The adventurous guitarist Jason Steele and his ensemble will perform at the Fountain Square Art Festival in Evanston on June 24th from 1pm-2:30pm. The ensemble will include James Davis (trumpet), Charles Gorczynski (alto sax), Tyler Beach (guitar), Patrick Mulcahy (bass), Charles Rumback (drums), and Jason Steele (guitar/compositions).

The Jason Steele Ensemble released their first recording this year, Some Wonderful Moment on ears&eyes Records with special guests Ron Miles on cornet, saxophonist Josh Sclar, and keyboardist Keith Johnson. This original and engaging CD features six compositions by Steele, one tune by the renowned Colorado trumpeter Ron Miles, and the song "Alphabet Town" by singer/songwriter Elliott Smith. Like manic depression, the mood of this CD runs from brooding to exhilaration, from film noir to science fiction. The intertwining melodies and explorations of these fine musicians weave a delightfully dense tapestry of sound.

One of the most daring and creative voices of her generation, or perhaps of any working generation in jazz today, Hiromi Uehara (known professional as just Hiromi) and her Sonicbloom quartet will thunder across the Midwest over the next week, with performances in Indianapolis (June 15), Minneapolis (June 17-19) and Chicago (Ravinia, June 21). With eclectic muses and a creative approach to composition, Hiromi has been rewriting the canon of modern jazz piano since her first recording, and has been accumulating a list of awards on both sides of the Pacific, from Record and Artist of the Year honors from Swing Magazine to similar accolades from the Boston Music Society and Guinness Jazz Festival. Her latest release, Time Control, promises to continue her star trajectory.

"Kendra Shank is an original; a singer with a sound." - Abbey Lincoln

Music lovers in Chicago are in for a rare treat as the critically-acclaimed singer Kendra Shank brings her stellar band on a short tour in June. Those in the Second City will have a chance to hear what a growing group of the savviest New Yorke jazz fans have learned to treasure, a jazz singer with talent and imagination who illuminates rarely covered songs with subtlety and grace. Like the intelligent, musically-complex songs of jazz legend Abbey Lincoln, which are featured on Kendra's new release A Spirit Free: Abbey Lincoln Songbook [Click here to read a Jazz Police review]. If you enjoy the music of Abbey Lincoln, Sheila Jordan, Edith Piaf and Shirley Horn, my guess is that you will like Kendra Shank. Because, like them, she has a way of owning whatever song she is singing.

Kendra Shank's touring group, also her working group of 8 years and featured on her Reflections and A Spirit Free CD's, includes the extraordinary pianist Frank Kimbrough, bassist Dean Johnson, and drummer Tony Moreno. In their Midwest appearances, the Kendra Shank Quartet promises to showcase selections from A Spirit Free, as well as fresh arrangements of standards and originals from previous releases. Kendra and her band are known for their exciting improvisational group interplay, often with vocals in the role of a horn. Their genre-transcending music often reveals Shank's folk music roots as well as country and world music influences. On Tuesday, June 5th they will perform at University of Nebraska in Lincoln, NE. On Thursday, June 7th they play the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis, MN. And on Friday, June 15th and Saturday, June 16th they hit the Green Mill Jazz Club in Chicago.
