 Jon Faddis The Jazz Institute of Chicago will present a gala celebration of the moment that changed jazz forever: when Dizzy Gillespie visited the Caribbean island of Cuba, featuring an heir to Dizzy's legacy; Jon Faddis with Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, bebop orginial James Moody and world class percussionists Giovanni Hidalgo and Ignacio Berroa in a program celebrating the profound transformation Gillespie's love of Latin rhythms made to legacy of jazz. The gala celebration and concert takes place on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at 7:00pm at Harris Theater for Music and Dance at Millennium Park, 205 E.Randolph Drive, Chicago. Chicago Jazz Ensemble Artistic Director, Jon Faddis, draws on over thirty years experience in performing with and conducting superb Jazz big bands such as Lionel Hampton's big band and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra (now the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra). Faddis served as music director for Dizzy Gillespie's GrammyTM-award winning United Nation's Orchestra, for Dizzy Gillespie's 70th Birthday Big Band, and, after his mentor's passing, Faddis led the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars Big Band. Renowned for his leadership of the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Faddis conducted over 40 concerts in ten years at Carnegie Hall, featuring over 135 musicians and 70 guest artists. |

Hammond B3 artist and master showman Dr. Lonnie Smith has been thrilling audiences since the 1960's. Lonnie was voted the "Organ Keyboardist of the Year" in 2003, 2004 and 2005 by the Jazz Journalist Association. Dr. Lonnie Smith will be grooving his way across the US on his summer tour that takes his trio on the 17th to the Early Works Museum in Huntsville, on the 18th to The Jewish Mother in Virginia Beach, on the 19th to the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis, on the 20th -21st to the Dakota in Minneapolis, on the 23rd to the Blue Room (American Jazz Museum) in Kansas City, on the 24th to the Firefly in Ann Arbor, on the 25th - 26th to Andy's Jazz Club in Chicago, on September 2nd to the Anacortes Jazz Festival in Washington state, and on September 7th - 9th to Arturo's Jazz Club in Detroit. His trio includes guitarist Dan Faehnle, and drummer Anthony Pinciotti. |

The iconic Chicago saxophonist created a unique and captivating tenor style in the 1940s and 50s but didn't lead his first recording in 1972 at the age of 49. When Freeman was in his 70s and playing better and stronger than ever, he began a series of albums that have made him a cover story in major jazz magazines, a much-demanded performer at festivals the world over, and the recipient of a mayoral proclamation (with a street named for him), as well as a doctorate from Northwestern University, at the age of 80. You can catch Von Freeman with his quintet at Chicago's Green Mill jazz club on Friday, August 17 at 9pm and on Saturday, August 18 at 8pm. |

 Larry Carlton and Robben Ford Larry Carlton & Robben Ford, two legendary guitarists on one stage at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 12 at Joe's Bar in Chicago. This unique pairing of two all-time great guitar legends is a guitar player’s dream and promises to deliver an unforgettable evening of dueling solos and a repertoire of blues & jazz played with precision and style. Larry Carlton and Robben Ford have completed a CD from live shows in Tokyo recorded in 2006. It is an incredible crowd-pleasing blend of rock, blues and jazz. This is the first leg of the US Tour is starting in August 2007. They have already been touring in Asia, Europe and Australia, and the shows are just getting hotter. Larry Carlton is an American jazz guitarist, dividing his recording time between solo recordings and session appearances with more popular bands. Over his career Carlton has won three Grammys for his performances and compositions, including the theme song for the hit television series, Hill Street Blues (1981). It is Carlton's creative and musical blend of jazz and rock elements that have made him such an accessable and popular artist. |
