Ella Fitzgerald Dee Alexander, Spider Saloff, Frieda Lee, and Jeff Lindberg's 40-piece Chicago Jazz Orchhestra will present "Exquisitely For Ella: A Songbook Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald" on Friday, February 26th at Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Avenue i Chago. Ella's three-and-a-half octave range scat singing earned her popularity and critical acclaim throughout a sixty-year career. Fitzgerald created her first of a series of nineteen "songbook" albums in 1956. Each album was devoted to the work of a particular American songwriter (Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Johnny Mercer, etc). These albums attained a wide popularity outside of the scope of the typical jazz audience and also helped define the canon of American popular song. Her swing/bop style remaining largely unchanged throughout her long career. |

Chévere Chévere is Chicago's leading Latin/Jazz/Funk/Blues Band, mixing Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Jazz, Blues, and just about everything else together into an exciting and unique collage of sound. Characterized by high voltage percussion and compelling original compositions, Chévere has performed in and around Chicago and the Midwest for 30 years. The core of the band has stayed together for over 25 years, giving the band an almost telepathic ability to interact spontaneously onstage. The band has an impressive array of virtuosic melodic soloists, and the percussion section, deeply rooted in traditional folklore and religious music from Cuba, the Caribbean, and Brazil, is heavily featured on almost every tune. They will appear at the Green Mill in Chicago on Friday, February 19th from 9:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. and on Saturday, February 20th from 8:00 p.m. until midnight. Led by Alejo Poveda, the band includes Steve Eisen on saxophone, Mark Ohlsen on trumpet, Chris “Hambone” Cameron on keyboards, Howard Levy on piano and harmonica, Ernie Denov on guitar, Eric Hochberg on bass, Alejo Poveda on drums, Ruben Alvarez on timbales, and Joe Rendon on congas. |

"Allison's facility for conjuring lush soundscapes from a limited instrumental palette places him in a rarefied league. Seamlessly integrated into his acoustic writing, Allison's recent foray into the electro-acoustic world reveals an organic mastery over pop song structures and timbres." - All About Jazz
