Geoff Keezer and Jim Hall©John Whiting The first thing you realize about the Monterey Jazz Festival is you can’t see everything. Choose a headliner event at the Jimmy Lyons Stage (Arena) and you’re missing another live music performance you wish you could see at the Garden Stage, Dizzy’s Den, the Night Club/Billy Berry Stage, the Coffee House Gallery, or the new Lyons Lounge dance club venue.
The second thing you realize is you can’t get into everything you want. The golden anniversary of the world’s oldest continuously running jazz festival is drawing big crowds. If you bought an arena package, you have your own seat in the Arena, and that’s guaranteed; if someone else nabs it, he or she will vacate, with apologies, when you approach. Everything else is first-come, first-served, and the lines were already long on Friday, the opening night. If you planned to see the Terence Blanchard Quintet at the Night Club at 11:00 and you weren’t already inside for Geoff Keezer and Jim Hall at 9:30, good luck. |

“[John McLaughlin's] speed, stamina, profound lyricism and his very presence in sound—all of this is wrought through his sublime mastery of the guitar.”—DownBeat
John McLaughlin As a preview to the 2007 San Francisco Jazz Festival, SFJAZZ presents John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension along with Kevin Eubanks Quartet on Saturday, September 22, 8PM at the Masonic Center in San Francisco. For nearly 40 years, McLaughlin has earned near-godlike status on the guitar—especially the electric guitar—from Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew band to his own Mahavishnu Orchestra and beyond. He appears in fully electrified style, as on his powerful new CD, Industrial Zen. Guitarist and Tonight Show Music Director Kevin Eubanks opens the show with his own scintillating quartet. John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension features John McLaughlin on guitar, Gary Husband on keyboards, Hadrien Feraud on bass, and Mark Mondesir on drums. The Kevin Eubanks Quartet features Kevin Eubanks on guitar, Gerald Etkins on keyboards, Derrick "Dock" Murdock on bass ,and Marvin "Smitty" Smith on drums. Ticket prices range from $25to $80, and are available at sfjazz.org. |

Gabe Eaton and Rob Barics Friday, August 31st through Sunday, September 2nd, Jazz a Pearl's in San Francisco present the dueling saxes of Gabe Eaton and Rob Barics. The Eaton-Barics Quintet is a mainstream modern jazz ensemble featuring Gabe Eaton and Rob Barics, a pair of hard-blowing, steady swinging saxmen whose talents are regularly featured in the innovative Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra. An evening with the EBQ is a night of bluesy bebop showmanship and dueling horns in the tradition of the legendary saxophone battles of yore. Eaton and Barics play with the fire of the committed jazz lifers, burning through original compositions and revered standards. The sparks fly, all right, but the energy is refined by the special musical empathy that these two young veterans, bandmates for years in ensembles large and small, bring to their work together. |

"It's easy to be impressed by Carter's relaxed, Lester Young-like virtuosity and sheer saxophonistic prowess." --Philadelphia Inquirer
James Carter © Andrea Canter From Thursday, August 23rd thought Sunday, August 26th, Yoshi's will present saxophone titan James Carter in a sextet featuring Dwight Adams on trumpet, D.D. Jackson on keyboards, Rogel Glenn on vibes, Ralphe Armstrong on bass, and Leonard King on drums. James Carter has been living in the limelight since he first appeared on the New York jazz scene from his native Detroit. Impressive both in style and substance, Carter was called the "the ultimate peacock jazz musician" by the New York Times while critics lauded his virtuosic ability and his unique playing style. Studying as a young prodigy with trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, he played and toured with Marsalis in 1986 at the age of 17 and became a member of Lester Bowie's band upon relocating to New York in 1988. In addition to his own projects, James Carter has played on albums with Cyrus Chestnut, Herbie Hancock, Detroit comrade Rodney Whitaker, Regina Carter (his cousin, also from the Motor City), Madeleine Peyroux and Karrin Allyson. Carter moves with ease through swing, bop and avant-garde styles. Don’t miss this opportunity to see him perform in Oakland. |

“Ryan's voice -- warm, wine-dark, and capable of exceptional light and shade -- serves interpretations that you'd happily return to again and again." — Peter Quinn, Jazzwise Magazine Jackie Ryan Bay Area vocalist Jackie Ryan may not have the reputation of a Jane Monheit, Diana Krall, or Cassandra Wilson, but she has the chops. Dubbed “one of the finest singers to perform at Ronnie's [Scott] since Shirley Horn” by the London Evening Standard, she soared in her Manhattan debut last year at Dizzy’s with her “savvy interpretive jazz vocalizing” (Variety). On August 21st, Ryan celebrates her acclaimed new release, You and the Night and the Music, with a special performance at Yoshi’s featuring sax legend Red Holloway. |
