Gonzalo Rubalcaba SFJAZZ will present the Gonzalo Rubalcaba Quintet on Friday, October 23rd at the Herst Theatre, 401 Van Ness Avenue (at McAllister), in San Francisco. Blending the traditions and innovations of American and Cuban jazz, 45-year-old pianist/composer Gonzalo Rubalcaba has consistently validated the promise of his prodigious youth, from his “discovery” by Dizzy Gillespie to his collaborations with Charlie Haden to his highly acclaimed recordings and performances with his own bands. Rubalcaba gained fame on the American jazz scene in the early 1990s with his relentlessly syncopated performances. But in recent years, he’s developed an intensely lyrical body of compositions marked by his rigorous attention to structure and exquisite dynamic control. He still delivers dazzling passages that seem to span the entire history of Cuban music, but now he also slows down to savor the melodies. After nearly a dozen stellar albums for Blue Note, Rubalcaba released his most captivating CD yet last year with Avatar, a quintet session that marks his first foray with a cast of younger musicians. He brings the same amazing band to San Francisco, featuring Cuban saxophonist Yosvany Terry, a ground-breaking band leader in his own right, and rising trumpet star Michael Rodriguez, who made his SFJAZZ debut last year with Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra. Filling out the quintet, the rhythm section features Yunior Terry on Bass, and Ernesto Simpson on drums. |

Stanley Clarke © Andrea Canter Three of today’s most explosive jazz artists have joined together under the leadership of bass icon Stanley Clarke. The Stanley Clarke Trio, featuring Clarke’s former Return to Forever cohort Lenny White on drums and young Japanese piano sensation Hiromi, are on tour in support of their CD, Jazz in the Garden [click here for a Jazz Police New and Notable review ], landing at Yoshi's in San Francisco, October 9-11. Best know for his fusion work of the 70s, Stanley Clarke is one of the most influential bassists of the modern era. The Philadelphia native picked up the bass by default, as it was the only instrument available when he showed up for the school orchestra. History proved it was a fit, however, as his early years were spent in the company of Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Gato Barbieri, Joe Henderson, Chick Corea, Pharoah Sanders, Gil Evans and Stan Getz. |
